Legend had is Captín Krunkles is the most feared pirate on the high seas. No one has seen him, his ship, or the great beer his band of pirates drinks has lived to tell about it. Until now. Made with a bombardment of hops to defeat your tastebuds in battle and all the black malt you can stand before walking the plank, this Black I.P.A. will make it worth going down with the ship.

Reviewed 9-13-10. A couple of BA traders have asked me about this beer when I told them I could get Terrapin. I bought one for someone, and then picked one up for myself to see what all the Hooplah was about: Ap: Pours black as night, with a 1/2 inch head that left instantly, and carbonation to spare. Ar: Not really strong in the aroma department, but what Iím getting reminds me of Coca-Cola - slightly bitter, with a hop sizzle. T: Not at all vicious, actually very malty, and much smoother than I expected. P: Frothy lacing and very creamy in texture. Very soothing. O: Nothing really special about this one, but the beer itself is not too pretentious. Also, I REALLY love the bottle art!

Pretty good IPA. Very delayed and muted hoppy bitterness but it's certainly there. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

12 ounce bottle poured into a brandy snifter. Pours a nice dark brown to black with a beige head of foam. Good retention. The aroma was surprisingly a little caramelly with a subdued earthy hop profile. The taste starts with that sweet notes, but finishes dry and herbal. Medium body and moderate carbonation.

About average for this style. Black IPAs are hit or miss for me, so this falls near the border. Decent amount of hops, though I prefer more of a malt balance. Aroma has some mild citrus and pine, but overpowered by some kind of musty smell. Glad I tried this in the winter mix-pack bundle, but wouldnít really want to sample this in a bomber or growler.

black color; citrusy hops and roasted malt aroma; citrusy hops on a medium bodied roasted malt base

BierMeHoos (587) - Maryland, USA - MAR 31, 2015
Poured from a 12 oz bottle. Appearance is black, opaque, and khaki head. Aroma is floral, piney, and citrus hops. Taste is same, but with caramel malt flavor. Palate is medium to full. I don't love this style as much as others do, but still decent.

Pours thick dark black unclear with a creamy beige head. Aroma brings fresh piney hops so nice in the nose. Flavor brings roasted malts and piney hops blended on the palate smoothly and rich.

12 oz bottle from Giant Eagle in Pittsburgh. Really warms the bones and has enough exotic stuff in it to keep you guessing for a long time. Explore it if you get a chance.

Pours black with a small, dense head. Pretty typical for a black IPA--lots of citrus hops on the nose and taste with a decent malt backbone. Good dry finish. Not an outstanding black IPA, but one of the better 12 pack beers Iíve had.

Aggiebob (1102) - Huntsville, Alabama, USA - DEC 14, 2014
This black IPA has a bitter coffee taste and a long finish as the hops dominate. Overall, it is a good IPA but not one that I will go out of my way to get.

Ed5388 (3448) - Forked River, New Jersey, USA - NOV 19, 2014
12oz bottle via variety pack. Pours black with a finger of creamy tan head. Aroma is a little odd. Notes of milk chocolate, over ripened grapefruit, and orange juice from concentrate. Taste is better then the aroma. Notes of dark malt and dark chocolate up front, followed by a big hit of bitter orange and pine, and finishes with roasted malts and caramel.
