This pours from 12oz bottle a pitch black with a large head of tannish foam.
The smell is a strong nose of coffee and roasted malt. I almost want to break out the fry pan and cook me some eggs and bacon. ;^)
The taste is coffee dominated with side orders of chocolate, roasted malt, and just a bit of citrus hop bitterness lingering in the background. It finishes with a very roasted malt bitterness, the body is medium full, and it's fairly lightly carbonated.
This is the first coffee inspired IS that comes close to going over the edge with the flavour. This is good and all but it's definetly going to take me some considerable time to finish this bottle and it's not because of the alcohol as I think it is hidden pretty well.

Terrapin Coffee Oatmeal Imperial Stout...2007. I can't believe I let this one slip by for so long.
There's certainly nothing wrong with the sound...a nice big pop when I removed the cap, and the look...Blackest of blacks and a decent though short lived head of tan foam.
The smell has with a big Port like aroma with a ton of caramel malt and chocolate. No coffee left at all but I reckoned that would be the case.
Big milk chocolate, caramel, Port flavours with mucho dark fruits. Holy hell. This is superb! Not what the brewer intended, for sure, but at this stage in the game, it drinks very much like a beautifully aged Old Ale or English Barleywine Ale.
Still close to full bodied and there's mostly lightish carbonation until the swallow when I get some very spritzy notes on my throat.
This is the surprise of this century so far for me. I would never have guessed that a most excellent coffee Stout would evolve into something even better. I wish I had a case of them so I could share!

Can. For me this is a knockout. Worthy of the 9.4%, aromas reminded me of walking into the local roaster. Nice, frothy, persistent head when poured into a shallow, wide mouthed belgian glass. Very delicious lots of coffee and chocolate dominate this one very sweet with a touch of bitterness pours pitch black thick with a light carbonation head rich and creamy and just a hint of oatmeal flavor to it would not have guessed it was 9.4% alcohol until I was done with my glass and could feel it. 12oz can. 2016 vintage. Appearance: Jet black, opaque, with a low lying khaki brown head.
Aroma: Wow. Really strong rich roasted coffee dominates. A touch of dark chocolate is there, but the coffee roastiness is the main factor here.
Taste: Starts with a rich dark chocolate, slowly turning over to a deep, rich coffee and a moderately high bitterness. Coffee character on the backside overrides the other flavors.
Mouthfeel: Relatively heavy bodied with some creaminess from the oatmeal, and a light carbonation.
Finish: Some bitterness lingers, but mostly a dark chocolate roasted malt character.
Overall: One of the more coffee forward takes on the style, with an aroma that sets itself apart. This beer has some nice dark chocolate undertones, but really shines for the coffee character. Pours black with a minimal brown head. The coffee is upfront in the aroma. Earthy with notes of vanilla light smoke. The coffee also dominates the flavor with earthy notes and vanilla. Body is a bit thin for a stout. Lasting dry finish. Good but a bit overhyped.
