4.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Reviewed 12/23/2012. 12 oz bottle into a pint glass.
A: Pours a pitch black color with great opacity. The head is a one finger khaki color with low retention. On the plus side, this leaves nice lacing where it can.
S: It’s very rich with coffee, as expected. There are also underlying notes of dark fruit, roasted malts, and plenty of chocolate. It really does strike me as being similar to a good mocha cappuccino. Actually, make that a great one.
T: Well, it smells like mocha cappuccino, and it tastes like mocha cappucino. Man, this is fuckin’ tasty. It starts off with subtle roast, before giving way to an explosion of bittersweet chocolate, dark fruits, and coffee - lots of coffee, actually. I love how it stays in balance despite all of the intense yet competing flavors. I’m amazed how the coffee comes across as being both subtle and monstrous at the same time.
M: On the sweeter side of a stout in terms of how it finishes and lingers on the palate. There isn’t much coffee or roasted dryness here - the oats dominate the palate with lush, decadent smoothness. The low carbonation is appropriate for this beer’s profile.
O: The only thing this really lacks is drinkability - but that’s more of a testament to the staying power of the brilliant flavors than anything else. This is everything I want from a coffee stout. I expected something great here...yet this is so much more. It’s bold and massive, yet there’s a real sense of finesse and sophistication here.
Bottle. Pours pitch black with a thick tan head. Aroma of black coffee, chocolate, and vanilla. Flavor of dark roasted coffee, vanilla, chocolate, oats and light caramel. Jayb0 (1215) - Cherry Hill, New Jersey, USA - MAR 25, 2017
Can. For me this is a knockout. Worthy of the 9.4%, aromas reminded me of walking into the local roaster. Nice, frothy, persistent head when poured into a shallow, wide mouthed belgian glass. Really thick and really rich, smooth chocolate with a roast coffee bite. Almost ice creamy in the finish. Thanks, Max. edgallow (4362) - nashville, Tennessee, USA - FEB 19, 2017

Very delicious lots of coffee and chocolate dominate this one very sweet with a touch of bitterness pours pitch black thick with a light carbonation head rich and creamy and just a hint of oatmeal flavor to it would not have guessed it was 9.4% alcohol until I was done with my glass and could feel it.

12oz can. 2016 vintage. Appearance: Jet black, opaque, with a low lying khaki brown head.
Aroma: Wow. Really strong rich roasted coffee dominates. A touch of dark chocolate is there, but the coffee roastiness is the main factor here.
Taste: Starts with a rich dark chocolate, slowly turning over to a deep, rich coffee and a moderately high bitterness. Coffee character on the backside overrides the other flavors.
Mouthfeel: Relatively heavy bodied with some creaminess from the oatmeal, and a light carbonation.
Finish: Some bitterness lingers, but mostly a dark chocolate roasted malt character.
Overall: One of the more coffee forward takes on the style, with an aroma that sets itself apart. This beer has some nice dark chocolate undertones, but really shines for the coffee character. Oatmeal adds some viscosity to the mouthfeel, but a bit of a boost in that side would be welcomed. ordybill (1815) - Douglasville, Georgia, USA - DEC 13, 2016
Poured from a 12 OZ can into a pint glass. The appearance is a pitch black color with a thick brown head. The aroma is roasted malt. The taste is malt and coffee. libertine (433) - rochester hills, Michigan, USA - SEP 29, 2016
Pours black with a minimal brown head. The coffee is upfront in the aroma. Earthy with notes of vanilla light smoke. The coffee also dominates the flavor with earthy notes and vanilla. Body is a bit thin for a stout. Lasting dry finish. Good but a bit overhyped.

Aroma is rich with chocolate, followed by a full bodied & robust coffee flavour on the palate layered across a crisp oatmeal stout foundation. Slight hints of vanilla are present along the edges of a molasses cookie richness. The finish is very satisfying, bringing grassy notes forward as the coffee complexity lingers.
