12oz bottle purchased somewhere in CO. Poured cloudy with a thick creamy head. Opaque redidh brown. Much more brown than black. Very light lacing. Aroma was strong grapefruit with light pine and a surprising dark fruit maltiness. The flavor was similar to the aroma with a bit sweetness followed by long lasting medium bitterness. Marvelous mouthfeel. Feels bigger than it is. Ferris (17097) - Burnaby, British Columbia, CANADA - APR 6, 2013
Bottle - Alcohol, dark fruit and tons of grapefruit hops. Almost opaque brown and a thick thin brown head. Flavor is complex with brown sugar, grapefruit hops and more dark fruits. Medium body, with a sublime mouth feel. Maybe a bit rich for a Black IPA, but pretty good. PhillyCraft (8196) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - FEB 20, 2013
Bottle from Capones, hazy golden brown shade with light to medium head, pretty good lacing. Aromas/taste of butter, floral hops, woody pine, grapefruit, and oats. Nice blend of hops and malt in this one. Finishes slightly sweet but mostly dry. Very hoppy brown ipa. Whatever alchemist brought to the table, worked. Thanks guys! 12 oz bottle from Mega Liquor 8, Alhambra, CA. Color: eh, more brown than black. Cloudy. Off white to beige, sticky head. Aroma’s: grapefruit, laurel/bay leaves, a bit salty, drop, roast. Flavor is medium to full bitter, drop, hint of sweet. Medium bodied. Finishes with a firm bitterness. Very nice! SDalkoholic (2444) - Linda Vista, California, USA - JAN 14, 2013
Bottles from Spouts Eastlake: Created a fat pillow of foam topping for a head as the liquid was a dark shade of brown. Almost instantly after pouring the beer, a bold aroma of green floral hops filled the atmosphere with scents of citrus fruit and just a touch of warm baked biscuits. The flavor is a smothering dosage of west coast citrus like hops that just ooze sour grapefruit notes while a perfect backbone of sweet sugary malts has been established. I enjoyed the huge bite of hops in this recipe but something about it doesn’t seem rounded out and perhaps its to sweet in the finish, but none the less, a solid brown/black IPA recipe.

12 oz bottle from Healthy Spirits. Pours hazy walnut with a huge, frothy tan head that remains and laces well. On the nose, there are huge notes of pine and herbs, along with pink grapefruit, pineapple, tropical fruit and a medicinal note. The flavour is moderately bitter with pink grapefruit hoppy notes. A peppery quality develops in the middle and lingers to the end. It finishes with a long, dry grapefruit hoppy quality. There is a nice toasty maltiness in the background, but this is quite subtle. On the palate, it is medium in body with a dry texture and average carbonation. Overall, this is a very nice grapefruit black IPA. It lacks the roasted notes typical of the style and is much more drinkable. Very interesting, very nice. 2012-02-17 DSG (15403) - Tel Aviv, ISRAEL - DEC 12, 2012
Bottle sample at a tasting at Dancing Camel Florentin. Thanks eyes_wide_shut and YK23. Dark brown with a beige head. Aroma of lovely fruity and "green" hops and some roasty notes. Flavor has some sweetish maltiness, slightly roasty, with nice bitter fruity and piney hops. Medium-bodied. Very nice. pfhyde (61) - Davis, California, USA - DEC 11, 2012
This beer was disappointing. I had no idea it was bottle conditioned, otherwise I would have not poured out the sediment into my glass--but there it was: a thick yeast/malty load that mucked up the flavour of everything thereafter. There’s a lot of potential behind the idea of this beer--it reminds me of a Dopplebock--but its actual offering is a bit flat, home-brew, and disorganized. The more you drink it the better it gets (perhaps because the conditioning load settled to the bottom of the glass), but it still tastes more like a red ale than a (brown) IPA, as advertised. I could see this same beer concept going expertly well if tried again with more organization. Hope is what I feel as I sip along further into my glass. tricyclist (1125) - Florida, USA - DEC 4, 2012
Pours a semi-dark brown with little to no head. Whatever head was there, dissipated quickly. Nose is fairly malty, chocolate and coffee malts with much less hop character. Still quite pleasant. Flavor is spicy for a black IPA... can’t quite place the spice. maybe coriander? moderately hopped with a good caramel malt back. Light lacing...
