Belgian Style Farmhouse Ale. This beer is brewed with pale, munich and a touch of flaked barley. The hops used were German Perle and English First Gold adding a very light hop character to 22 IBU’s. The beer is spiced with coriander, kala jeera and Indian green peppercorns to lend an earthy floral peppery character in the finish. The yeast strain used to ferment this beer came from a small Belgian brewery known to create with wonderful brew known as Saison DuPont.

Served on draft at the brewpub on 4/30/11. Pours a hazy golden straw color with a medium creamy offwhite head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of yeast, tropical notes and bubblegum. The taste is yeasty and bready with bubblegum and a tart citrus finish. Medium bodied.

Massa 14, DC tap ($8): Pours hazy orange color with a white head. Aroma of citrus, bubblegumish stuff, and earthiness. Body was pretty light and the drinking was relatively easy. Taste picked up notes of fruit, earthy yeast, and a good amount of spices. A pretty good saison, a style that I’m seeing a lot of these days for some reason. Would be a good session.

On tap, at brewpub. Pours a hazy dark amber. Floral and herbal with spicy peppercorns and yeast on the nose. The flavor is really well done as far as the spicing goes, very subtle and leaves the focus on the malt/yeast profile. Hearty wheat with some lighter dark malt blend with the spices to create a pretty tasty brew. Finishes with a spike of alcohol and more fluffy earthy yeast. A little fuller bodied than most Saisons with nice fizzy active carbonation. Overall a pretty nice take on a Saison, and I don’t even like them all that much.

Draft. Pours a hazy orangish-brown with a small, creamy, white head. Spicy nose with notes of clove, yeast, pepper, and hay. Medium carbonation with a medium-light, dry mouthfeel. Clove, citrus, pepper, and some earthiness on the palate. Finish is short and clean. This one tasted just a wee bit out of balance on the spice side. Not bad, but not my favorite of their brews.

On tap Sep. 2008: Pours a hazy copper orange with a well-lacing froth of white head. Aroma of sweet toasty caramel malt and some fruity esters with a touch of citrus. Body starts with good fullness and decent complexity along with a touch of tartness and earthy hops before a doughy yeasty finish. Pretty decent saison.

On tap at V50. Pours slightly hazy, dark gold/light copper with a white head. Just a whiff of light zesty herbs and light spice - the nose is mostly neutral. Starts with an unexpected sweet malty caramel then firm earthy zesty noble hop bitterness - somewhat of a resinous, minerally finish. Not a whole lot of saison-like fruitiness in this one. Kind of full-bodied with only moderate carbonation, not spritzy like most saisons.
