3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
~12 oz draught at The Pint Room, Dublin, OH. Very different and unexpected. Caramel-orange color; rather minimal head; medium lacing. Aroma unexpectedly light; caramel, vanilla, sugar; almost undetectable hops. Flavor is sweet but again weak; BOURBON, caramel, brown sugar, vanilla. Body unexpectedly thin. I enjoy the bourbon aspect of this but otherwise very unimpressive.
Taster at Jungle Jim’s Barrel-Aged Beer Bash 2015. Labeled as "Jack’s Hammer". Hazy amber brown red color. Thin ring of bubbly off-white head. Lots of caramel malt, some vanilla, butter scotch. Moderate sweet taste, light to moderate bitter, a mild bite to the taste. Seems like it has a bit of age on it. Medium to bigger body. Smooth, kind of soft lighter carbonation. Kind of slick. Interesting stuff to try, but a bit clunky for me. Somehow, the barlewine base does not seem to hold onto the bourbon very well. A bit of an unnecessary boozy heat, and a touch thin. Not bad overall, but not great. swoopjones (7020) - Buffalo, New York, USA - FEB 5, 2012
UPDATED: FEB 6, 2012 sample at Coles Barleywine Competition, Copper colored pour. Oak, butterscotch, toffee richness, bourbony &vanilla notes, piney hops. Flavor was all of that. Almost like a liquid Skor bar. Pretty tasty. Real prounced flavor.
