Hopfen Roggen? Loosely translated this means "Hoppy Rye Beer". In our case it is a German-Style Kolsch Ale hopped in the kettle and fermenter with German Tradition hops. 2010 collaboration between TBK and Willoughby.

bottle: pours clear yellow with frothy white head. Aroma is basic grainy lager, with a touch of mineral dryness and yeast funk. The body is very good. Cool, crystal and caramel malts and a nice mellow body, with a light spicey rye and great floral notes from the hops. Meadowy with a tough of savory spice with a nice piney note into the finish. Solid Kolsch (or at least as good as an american brewery is gonna get).

Bottle from the long sought-after Ohio Brewers Collaboration sampler. The beer is a clear yellow-gold color with a medium white head that diminishes quickly to an outer ring. Partial rings of lacing. Aroma of sweet malt and lightly spiced hops. Medium, clean body with flavors of mild hops, rye malt and fruit. The finish is mildly hoppy with a short malt aftertaste. Decent overall.

Bottle shared by Dogbrick. Clear yellow pour with a medium white head. Malty and light nose with crisp hops and a slight hint of rye. Creamy malt flavor with crisp hops and a bit of rye malt on the back end.

12 ounce bottle. Pours slightly hazy bright amber color with a fairly foamy 2 finger white head with great retention that reduces to a lacing cap. Some decent lacing on the glass. Aromas of rye, citrus, and spices with a bit of caramel. Some nice and balanced aromas, but a tad weak. Taste of caramel, citrus, rye, and spiciness. Mostly sweetness on the front, with a fairly strong bitterness on the finish that lingers with citrus and rye flavors. A nice balance of flavors as well, and a good amount of flavor. Medium-light bodied with medium carbonation. Very crisp and drinkable brew. Overall, a very nice beer with good flavor and mouthfeel. Good stuff, I have never had a Kolsch before, but this is quite tasty.

From the Ohio Craft Brew Collaboration 12 pack, Over six months after it was supposed to be released. Was It worth $20.....Ehhh ! Poured a golden Yellow, fizzy head. I smell some citrus, and "Maybe" a touch of Rye spice. Tastes lightly hoppy, but I don’t taste Rye.There is some sweetness from the malt and some graininess. This was a decent tasting beer, but I think It took a hit with the extra age on it. I would love to try it fresh.

Light copper colored beer poured with a thick white head. Plenty of bubbles. They described this fairly well, hoppier than your normal Kolsch, but this beer is unassuming and boring. Not much flavor, but a medium grassy finish with a medium bitterness. Goes down easy though and is refreshing. Leaves nice lacing. More flavor pokes through as it warms, citrus and maybe just a hint of honey.

Available while it lasts at both Willoughby Brewing and the Brew Kettle this is a novel twist on a light style which is all to easy to make bland and predictable (or out of balance). This one is brewed almost to perfection which is to say that you could drink a few and not totally kill your palate. The toughest part is getting used to the addition of the rye which may throw a palate for a loop if you aren’t prepared.

Aroma / Appearance - Transparent and carbonated the golden body was just what you would expect. After all it is pretty hard to mess up the appearance of a light style like this. Fluid and delicate it has a lemony glow. Spicy white pepper, rye, and mellow citrus (orange or lemon) give it texture beyond the typical grainy base.

Flavor / Palate - Rye bread buttered with squirts of lemon juice rinse across the palate without much fanfare. As you’d expect there is not much to the finish nor should there be if this was done right (as it was). A mild hoppy bite does remind you it is not totally tame. It’s hardly going to stand up to big huge styles like the collaboration between Great Lakes and Cellar Rats but if the bottles ever see the light of day this should be one of the first that you reach for.
