3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Deep dark-brown beer, small yellow-beige head. Roasted, sweet, molasses and some fruity esters. Coffee, roasted, coffee cookies, but with a very syrupy finish. Fruit returns, red fruit. Roastiness very outspoken, going to Hoi-sin sauce. Sticky MF, well-bodied. Bit sticky... I think a little dash of Sour in the Rye, mixed in, might have done it no end of a favour.
Bottle, 8 years old, wet cardboard, recycled paper, spices, and simple syrup. Not much else, could be some wet biscuit in there. BiiruBierBeer (1043) - Phoenix, Arizona, USA - APR 3, 2015
Smell is dark malt and barleywine sweetness. Taste is chocolate malted milk balls, general malt, caramel, and general barleywine. Full body with low carbonation. boxofrane (2553) - Spring City, Pennsylvania, USA - DEC 12, 2014
Bottle at craft ale house. Pours murky brown with a small brown head. The aroma has a nice brown sugar, cocoa, rich chocolate, and a bit of nuttiness. The taste is pretty sweet where the cocoa really comes out. Fairly smooth texture and a residual toasted nut taste. Solid at five years in. deekyn (1459) - San Francisco, California, USA - DEC 1, 2014
UPDATED: DEC 5, 2014 A - pours a thick dark chocolate with high tan large bubble head. S - really nice nose. Spiced and chocolate and warm and wintery. Raw cacao, cocoa powder, dark fruits (dried dates, raisins, figs, raisins, and toasted nuts. Light notes of dried cherries, quiet grains. M - full bodied with a nice rich complex palate. Starts with a tang, chewy middle and a warm spiced end. T - really nice raw cacao and dried cherries hit the taste first. Chocolate, cocoa powder and dried dates and raisins on a nice malty chewy palate. Oaky notes, toasted nuts, raw pecans, and cherries on the lips. O - wow. What a surprise. So much better than any of the other Xmas beers. Rich and sweet and complex and wintery. devman171 (1221) - Annapolis, Maryland, USA - NOV 26, 2014

Bottle: Deep brown, mahogany & opaque with a rich, chunky tan foam that settles quick. Aroma of sweet molasses, toasted nuts, Candi sugar & a strong Belgian yeast presence. Unfortunately it comes off as quite medicinal on the nose & phenolic all around. Heavy, strong, prunes. Taste has even more toffee coated prunes with Candi sugar, caramel, & sugary glaze. Not as medicinal on the palate, but very sweet. Borderline cloying. Spicy Belgian yeast heavier towards the finish, clove, toasted caramel malt, faint anise, & prune finish. Not really my jam. slowrunner77 (11938) - Reno, Nevada, USA - OCT 4, 2014
"i wasn’t incredibly impressed by the aroma, although it was nice, but hot damn...the flavor is faaaaantastic. Holy cocoa nibs batman! This made for a very nice full bodied and luscious treat. the body and flavor were great, though the pecans take a backseat to the cocoa. warming, but not hot. well done." crossovert (12670) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - AUG 2, 2014
750ml bottle. HEavily oxidized, spices, slight nuttiness, dark fruit. Fargone by now. Homer321 (5046) - Melboring, Florida, USA - APR 17, 2014
Bottle shared thanks to Charlie. Minimal to no head. Dark brown and murky. Nose of papery oxidation with some sherry notes. Taste is slightly tart with some Belgian funk and a lot of alcohol warming. Wow. I get minimal cocoa and no pecan flavor. As it warms it seems a bit infected. Definitely a bit tart and funky. I think this is on its way down. AndySnow (7579) - Huddinge, SWEDEN - APR 13, 2014
