This beer is made in the pumpkin beer tradition, except instead of pumpkins we used yams, and lots of them! A big Belgian-style brown ale of 10% ABV, this one is bringing pumpkin beers (or yam beers) into new territory.

Aroma of maple, yam, holliday spice, nutmeg, cinnamon. Pours brown opaque. taste is sweet with noted spices. palate is thick and syrupy, as it warms the maple really becomes overpowering. Overall it tastes like thanksgiving but that doesnt work until the weather actually turns.

Growler from Whole Foods in Katy. Clear reddish-amber with a cream colored head. Aroma of funk, dark fruit, bubblegum, clove, and nutmeg. Tastes rich, lightly spiced and a little sweet. Fairly full bodied, quite smooth and slightly dry.

750 ml bottle. Hazy orange copper color topped by a large rocky beige head. Aroma of caramel, yams, cardamom and maple. First sip is sweet dark sugar, dark malt and spices. Sweet caramel and spice throughout. Hints of nutmeg, cinnamon and maple syrup. Warming alcohol in finish. Overall, a decent fall seasonal and a slight departure from the plethora of pumpkin brews.

Smells strongly of sweet potatoes, syrup, butterscotch, pumpkin pie spice and is slightly boozy. Brownish reddish rust color with a thin off white head. Funky taste, almost like a farmhouse ale. The nice aromas do not come through in the taste, least of all the yams. Metallic aftertaste with a booze burn, very thin palate. I really dont like the way this tastes. I had high hopes, but was very disappointed.

Its what youd expect from a Belgian-influenced beer in terms of its malt & yeast qualities, but the molasses, maple syrup, & spice give this beer that distinct Fall seasonal character. Yams not too pronounced, but maybe Im mixing that with the malt & syrup combo. Regardless, its a solid Autumn offering from The Bruery; decent price for a 750ml bottle and tastes superior to many pumpkin beers!
