COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In 2008, we congratulated Mark Graham and Loren Miraglia for winning our Batch No. 1 Homebrew competition by brewing their beer as our very first batch. Recently, we decommissioned our original brewhouse and brought a new, state-of-the-art brewhouse to life. Recreating our first recipe seemed the best way to begin this new chapter in our brewing history. Levud’s is a Belgian-style golden ale that’s crisp, effervescent, complex and filled with memories and significance in our brewery’s history.

Editor Note: Bottles can be identified by "2015 Edition" in the upper right corner of the front label, brown glass and an ABV of 9.7%.

This beer is a hazy orange-gold color with a medium off-white head that diminishes gradually to an outer ring. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Fruity, yeast and malt in the nose. Medium to full body with flavors of banana, earthy yeast and doughy malt. The finish is fruity with a Belgian yeast aftertaste. Above average overall.

Bottle to snifter. Nose is slightly corny/DMS with some coriander perfume and apple like esters. Hazy dark yellow to orange in color with a small white head. Taste is more crisp in a pils malt cracker kind of way with some light alcohol and peppery phenols. The aroma is a little off-putting but none of that comes through in the flavor. Finishes with a light warming in the chest to let you know there is 10% in the beer.

popery (2231) - San Francisco, California, USA - MAR 31, 2016
The beer is a light amber orange. Large white head. Good retention, some lacing. Aroma is big on Belgian-ish malt sweetness. Fruit sugary. Sweet apple, pear, peach, grape. Some banana in the mix. Some raisin and bandaid stuff. Moderate Belgian ester. Medium clove with mild peppercorns. Somewhat herbaceous in a sort of funny way. The package is a bit sweet and gets too close to cloying territory for me. Taste is moderate to medium sweet. Light hop flavor and bitterness. There’s a sorta odd yeasty bitterness in the middle of the malt sugar. Just some grass and pepper. It’s a light, bright Belgian ale. There’s just not a ton else going on. Some booziness but not bad for nearly 10% abv. Medium to light body. Normal carbonation. It’s pretty good but didn’t really need to be remade, in my opinion.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle. Aroma has a medium light grain note with a lot of Belgian esters. Lots of overripe stone fruit and pear with some lighter banana and bubblegum. Medium light clove and coriander phenolic notes with a light grassy hop note. Pours a hazy, pale golden orange with a large, moderately thick, somewhat frothy, white head that shows average retention as it recedes to a thin film that lingers for a bit. Light lacing and medium small legs. Flavor has a medium sweetness with some light grain notes and some light candi sugar. Medium bitterness with some light grass and floral hop notes. Moderate fruit esters with stone fruit and pear. Lighter banana notes. Light phenolic notes. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low, but present alcohol warmth. Overall, a decent Belgian style beer. Lots of esters with balanced phenolics and hop notes. Good malt character with a bit of sugar notes.
