Dark pour, minimal/slim toasted color head, just around the edges. Pours deep brown. Aroma picks up both the rye and chocolate. Not much vanilla in the aroma, but you can get hints of it in the taste. Clean on the palate. It’s very nice. I think it will get better as it warms.

Sample at Bob’s Bar during "The Bruery Bottle Tasting" on 09/22/2016. This beer pours nearly black with some cola around the edges, and a medium khaki head that diminishes steadily to a film. Small patches of lacing on the glass. Aroma of chocolate, rye malt and vanilla. Medium body with flavors of sweet chocolate, mildly spicy rye, grainy malt and vanilla. Bottle. The pour is almost black. The aroma is tons of toffee and fig. The taste is huge on fig and toffee. A little thin, but big flavor.

Shared at a tasting hosted by Steve Hackley on September 25. Thanks Steve! This was poured from a 750 mL bottle. The pour is a thinner dark brown with a nice light mocha colored head, a couple fingers high, and a decent amount of lacing as it slowly falls down. The aroma is incredibly lagerish. There is a strong metallic that I get only from lagers. Beyond that, it’s pretty decent. There is a lot of rye spice in here. In the end, I’m getting a couple of things: chocolate milk, and a bag of malt. Namely, it would be like someone made Cocoa Pebbles out of malts, and I just opened the bag. Not bad, but not great. The flavor is pretty similar in structure. There is a little more chocolate and a sugariness that I wasn’t expecting. The rye spices are there as well, but for a bottle that says conditioned with vanilla beans, I’m disappointed. The mouth feel is light, thin, watery, and less than ideally carbonated. It’s thin and light. Aftertaste is lingeringly powdered cocoa and metallic lager. Thanks! 750 ml. bottle sampled @ the “pre-Club 54 tasting”. Dark brown, big mocha head. Nose is metallic, iron in a lager kind of way with some sweet cacao puffs & sweet herbs. Taste is sweet cacao, lightly herbal, brown sugar, mlaty, lots of cacao, cacao puffs mixed with iron,..; Thick lager body; Lots of cheap chocolate. Roasted malt. "The barrels used, though still making this a totally different beer than the dubbel base, complemented (or supplemented the base) very very well. The brandy was subtle but prevents the sour tannic aspects of the red wine barrels to completely overtake things. What you are left with is a very highly drinkable moderately tart and funky beer with a firm malty base and hints of belgian yeast and sweet brandy. No hint of booziness. Quite good.
