We take Mash, and then add Portola Coffee Lab’s Lucio Delgado (Columbia) at a rate of 1 lbs. per 10 gallons. This has contributed an intense coffee aroma and some additional body, with flavors of raspberry jam, tart pineapple and maple brown sugar. Why did we release two versions of this beer, one with coffee, one without? Mash & Grind is certainly delicious on its own, but we deliberately sought a strong coffee aroma and flavor so you could try your own blending, if you like. Try adding "Mash & Grind" to "Mash" (or the other way around) until you find your ideal blend. Of course opening two bottles of high ABV beer is recommended when among friends.

Bottle thanks to Kevin. Pours a clear brown with small beige head that lasts leaving spotty lacing. The aroma is strong coffee bean and roast. Medium mouthfeel with rich coffee flavor and light roast nuttiness. Very good, really enjoyed this.

(750ml bottle) Pours a clear burnt orange body with a small cream head. Aroma of coffee, wood, bourbon, toffee, and caramel. Flavor of toffee, bourbon, coffee, golden raisins, maple, vanilla, dark fruit, brown sugar, and raisins.

Sample at Kurtkeller 005: Coffee-tastic 01 on 02/08/2014. This beer pours a cloudy reddish-brown color with a medium thick cream-colored head that dissipates gradually. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roast coffee, malt and grassy hops. Full-bodied with a subtle woody character and flavors of black coffee, roast malt and earthy hops. The finish is roasty with a caramel mocha aftertaste. Pretty good all around.

Dark brown pour, coffee and caramel, lower hop levels, it is a decent brew but nothing amazing.

750ml bottle. Poured a deep and cloudy amber color (almost a brownish) and a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of coffee grounds, caramel, fruity, wood, and earth. Tastes of vanilla, caramel, brown sugary sweetness, coffee, and citrus. More coffee in the aroma vs. the tastes with the alcohol overall well hidden.

I’m gonna go ahead and guess Portola Coffee Labs makes some kick ass coffee. Wonderful blast of fresh coffee, bourbon, oak and malt. The coffee cuts right through the barrel sweetness from the "base" Mash, tempering both the sweetness and the alcohol. Ridiculously smooth, deeeeelicious, and just awesome in every way. Before yesterday I didn’t know this existed and today it’s my new favorite beer from one of my favorite breweries."

Brown pour, light tan head. Big beer with huge coffee and toffee flavors up front, vanilla has faded in this one from the coffee. Very light roasty tones, brown sugar. Very tasty but even better with a splash of Mash.

Bottle @ Matt’s house from our Reserve Society membership. Pours a hazy reddish brown appearance with a thin light brown head. Really heavy Foldgers coffee, caramel, light bourbon, a touch fruity aroma. A bit goopy sweet, burnt coffee, caramel, toffee, bourbon flavor. Get buzzed quick.

750 ml bottle shared by brew3crew. Pours a dark cola brown color with a medium sized creamy beige head. The aroma and flavor have big coffee notes, bourbon, vanilla, roast, some booze, smooth mouth feel, wood, a mild dark fruit character, alcohol is warming. How will this age?

750 ml bottle shared by dudeabide- thanks again, Nate! Pours a semi-cloudy amber with a small beige head. Aroma of nice fresh roasted coffee, oak, caramel, bourbon, toasted sugar, and earth. The flavor is mostly the same but doesn’t work on quite the same level. Definitely some warmth to this one. Medium-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a toasty, earthy, warming mouthfeel. Nice barrel-aged coffee barley wine.
