We take Mash, and then add Portola Coffee Lab’s Lucio Delgado (Columbia) at a rate of 1 lbs. per 10 gallons. This has contributed an intense coffee aroma and some additional body, with flavors of raspberry jam, tart pineapple and maple brown sugar. Why did we release two versions of this beer, one with coffee, one without? Mash & Grind is certainly delicious on its own, but we deliberately sought a strong coffee aroma and flavor so you could try your own blending, if you like. Try adding "Mash & Grind" to "Mash" (or the other way around) until you find your ideal blend. Of course opening two bottles of high ABV beer is recommended when among friends.

Brown pour with a small khaki head. Rich coffee, caramel, and vanilla. Spice, some bourbon, and more coffee. Coffee dominates the flavor. Caramel sweetness, a but of chocolate, spice, bourbon, and nice vanilla. Hints of dark fruit as it warms.

By far my favorite Mash variant. Also consistently one of my favorite BA coffee beers. Even with time on it the coffee is still present. I’ve had it at the Bruery multiple times & it’s never disappointed. Falls short of something like Ground State for being thinner, but both are world class. Portola coffee always delivers & this is no exception. Especially South American coffee.

Draft @ the brewery. Pours a dark amber color with a small off-white head. Has a fruity malty coffee aroma with hints of caramel. Fruity malty coffee chocolate and caramel flavor. Has a sweetish malty coffee caramel finish.

Tap at Bruery, Placentia. Colour is clear dark orange with small white head. Aromas and flavors: Coffee, dryness, dry fruits, raisins and malts. Dry barley wine.

Alengrin (5255) - BELGIUM - OCT 12, 2016
One of these Bruery beers which is only available through their hoarders’ society, a coffee-flavored barley wine. At B.U.M.B. in Antwerp. Lightly lacing, pale beige, moussy, thin rim of a head over a clear, amberish copper bronze beer. Rich and perfumey bouquet of rum-soaked raisins, cognac, candi sugar, maple syrup, honey liqueur, vanilla, wodka, glue, faint hint of coffee, marmelade, orange peel. Clean fruitiness in the mouth, quite intense, candied fig and marmelade, underlying basic sourish touch, soft carbo with very vinous, oily mouthfeel, very smooth but thick, caramelly malt sweetness with a light toasted hint in the end blending well with a vague bitterish and delicate coffee hint, spicy hops as well, lots of warming but non-astringent, brandy-like alcohol. Very rich, almost overwhelming barley wine, typical high AVB Bruery, delicious and doubtlessly with an interesting ageing potential.

Sublieme barley-wine die écht balanceert op de grens met een stout. Dik vol in de mond met lange warme afdronk. Verraderlijk bier want alcohol bijna niet waarneembaar. Subliem.

Thank you! 750 ml. bottle sampled @ HopisHop B.U.M.B. 2016. Dark brown amber, little tanned head. Nose is nicely boozy, warming brown sugar, spirit, oak, sugar, herbal, good cough syrup, molasses. Taste really improved as it got warmer, more sugar, more sweetness, rich bourbon upfront, sugar, faint varnish boozy, vanilla sugar & fragipan, faint pine, sugar, didn’t get the coffee but a very nice, very big Barley wine. Body is bourbon, very thick, sugar, frangipane. This is the good stuff for the fans.

Cloudy rusty brown with virtually no head. Aroma is coffee, chocolate, hint of green pepper. Medium-full bodied, lightly sweet on the palate with a complex finish. Taste is coffee, dates, toasted nuts. Yum.

750ml bottle pour, 2014 vintage courtesy of JPDurden24, exhibits a copper to amber body that supports a thin off white head. The aroma offers up molasses nuanced pine hops, muted sweetened coffee and booze. The taste delivers smooth molasses and sweet malts with a bit of pine off in the background. To midway a mild coffee note comes to the surface. It seems maybe the coffee has rolled off some. Pretty nice yet a little rough and boozy.
