An English Barleywine aged in Bourbon barrels, Mash is an intense yet balanced beer with notes of burnt caramel, toasted bread, ripe pear, dried figs, vanilla, toasted coconut and finishes with oak tannin. Definitely some caramel and fruit notes complemented by a slight bourbon undertone and some woody nuances. However, the beer was so tangy and acidic as to be off-putting. Honestly, my first thought was that it must have been infected, though both bottles our group opened were identical. Others have commented on the tang without believing it to be a problem. However, no appropriate English-style barleywine should have that character. Although I generally love The Bruerys products, due to its acidity this beer was hugely disappointing.
