COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Oude Tart is a Flemish-Style Red Ale aged in red wine barrels for 18 months. It’s pleasantly sour with hints of leather, dark fruit and toasty oak. While this is one of the more classic beer styles that we make, it’s not a style that you can find too often in the United States. Originating in style from the Flanders region of Belgium, near the French boarder, this dark, sour ale has roots deep in brewing history and predates most of the ales that have become popular in contemporary culture. We’re doing our best to keep the tradition alive by brewing and aging this beer here on the west coast.

UPDATED: AUG 22, 2014 Bought a 750 ml locally. Appearance was darker than I expected and not much head to speak of. The smell was strong sour. Taste was puckering at first, then mellowed after a few sips. After all that, really liked it. Not the best I’ve had, but very good. Would certainly buy again.

750 ml bottle at Olympen. Dark brown and crystal clear. Vinegary aroma. Crisp acidic sour nose. Notes of bread, toffee and grapes. Rich malty flavours balanced by a strong acidity. Well balanced though. A little too much alcohol perhaps, but overall a really nice flemish red ale.

UPDATED: JUL 3, 2013 75cl bottle at home. Bought at ’Geers’. Shared with Mathieu87. Appearance: little to no head, dark red beer. Nose: sour, tart, red fruits, some ’coulis’ even, rather fruity in general but with a good sour nose to balance. Taste: a long lasting sourness, though combined with fruity notes and quite some alcohol noticeable. The beer is somewhat sticky around your mouth and reminded me of a ’coulis’ in a way. Altogether, amazing beer, very comparable to a Rodenbach Vintage!

UPDATED: JUN 4, 2013 9/V/13 - 75cl bottle from Healthy Spirits (SF, CA) @ Klaas’ place - BB: n/a (2013-453) Thanks to Mathieu P. for bringing over the bottle!

Note: just a few weeks/months after I had received this bottle, I noticed my local beer shop (Geers) was selling this. What are the odds? :p

Clear red brown beer, small beige to brown head, unstable, dissipates immediately. Aroma: sour, red berries, lactobacillus, bit woody. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: sourish start, red berries, woody, sour green apples, bit lemony. Aftertaste: sour, lots of green apples, some vinegar, lemony, bitter grape skin (tannins?), woody, leather. Nice, but I wouldn’t make this a 98 on RB. I guess Americans are just crazy about anything sour, right?

Bottle @ ZeeBra. Aroma is big red fruits, some brett, woody notes. Awesome. Flavour is dry sour cherry, some chalk & dust, some hay. Missing something in the flavour.
