Oude Tart is a Flemish-Style Red Ale aged in red wine barrels for 18 months. Its pleasantly sour with hints of leather, dark fruit and toasty oak. While this is one of the more classic beer styles that we make, its not a style that you can find too often in the United States. Originating in style from the Flanders region of Belgium, near the French boarder, this dark, sour ale has roots deep in brewing history and predates most of the ales that have become popular in contemporary culture. Were doing our best to keep the tradition alive by brewing and aging this beer here on the west coast.

Warm brown with film of tan head. Aroma is sour with a bit of dark caramel and rich wood. Flavor is a balance of moderately sharp and quite strong sourness with light caramel (dark) and a very dry woodiness. light but fine carbonation. Very good, more sour than is typically found in this style. (more than Rodenbach Grand Cru)

Bottle, small vertical of '09, '11, '12. Overall I like how the '09 has settled down a bit, the best drink of the 3. '11 smells the most tart, but the '12 is the most sour overall. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a deep mahogany color with touches of ruby on the edges... a touch of eggshell foam dissipates quickly. On the nose its tart sour dark fruit, cherry, cranberry, plum, wet wood. The palate is dark and woodsy with a nice balance between oak funk and tart acidic fruit. Sour cherries, lemon, a bit of earthy malt... dry woody finish.

Bottle. Pour is cloudy and really deep brown with hints of ruby red. Almost no head. Aroma is woody, leathery, tart, cherry, hints of red bull/ jager. Flavor is quite tart up front and throughout with hints of cherry, light wine notes, and a deep seeded sweetness. Very assertive beer. Nicely tart with good character.
