The Grade is in. It’s built on the backbone of a rich, cold-fermented baltic porter made popular in countries bordering the Baltic Sea. Similar to an imperial porter but distinctly different, the baltic porter style is heralded for being full-bodied, roasty and smooth, with overtones of toffee, coffee, caramel, chocolate and dark fruit. We take it one step further and hammer it home with the bold, sweet flavors of maple syrup and a touch of fenugreek, placing it in a different, experimental class entirely. The Grade is not your average baltic porter, and that’s A-OK in our book.

Bottle, 750 ml, from Beergium. Shared with rest of the crew. Pours black with beige head. Very interesting aroma, figs, dates, carob, chocolate, spicy, nuts, maple, sweet with quite bitter finish. Pretty dry, smooth. Medium bodied. Probably not my favorite spices and flavors but it is a very interesting brew.

Draft. Aroma is kind of fennel-like. Flavors start with maple sweetness that quickly gives way to vanilla and an acute bitterness on the end, which has to be the fenugreek. Wonderful progression.

Bottle at tasting. Aroma of maple, malt, caramel fudge and chocolate. Taste has sweet maple, caramel fudge, chocolate, hopjes, mocha and malt. Really nice, good beer.

Piana drobna trwała, zdobi szkło. Kolor Czarny. Aromat syrop klonowy, kakao, czekolada. Smak, się dzieje, wyraźny posmak syropu klonowego, gorzkiej czekolady, kakao, zaznaczona palonośc z kwaskowymi nutami, sporo suszonych owoców sliwki, rodzynek, fig, lekko jakby drewniane taniny oraz zielone chmielenie. Smaki złożone, intensywne, razem grają, w strukturze gładkie z lekką słodyczą, ukrytym alkoholem. Pije się świetnie Bardzo Dobre

From notes. Enjoyed at Gus’s house on December 16. 750 mL bottle shared by Gus. The pour is a nice darker black color, a bit thin, with lots of khaki colored head that pillows right up in the glass. There is a ton of soapy lace as this recedes. There is a ton of lager character to this one. It’s got a little maple and a bit of chocolate before the metallic nature of the malts come in. There is a touch of corn to it, but there is no mistaking the lager. The flavor matches. There is a bit of coffee and chocolate and the maple really opens up when it warms. There is a bit of the metallic malts, but it’s really well hidden on the flavor. The mouth feel is light and clean with a brighter carbonation and a lingeringly coffee and chocolate heavy finish. This is pretty damn good for a lager, but I’m not really sure what the hell a stout is doing lagered. Not shabby. 6 4 7 3 13

15th Dec 2017, Stadium Brewing, Aliso Viejo, California. Part of a flight, looked good, black bodied with a light tan coloured head. Sweet, maple syrup like, some meaty 'Bovril' flavours too (strange). Different and interesting.

Sötét szín, bézs hab. Pörkölt malátás, juharszirupos illat. Karamelles, vaníliás, cukros, likőrös ízvilág. Kicsit túl szénsavas, de attól még pazar.

Draft at the source. Pours almost black with a beige head. Aroma of maple syrup. Taste is largely maple syrup, with notes of roasted malt, chocolate and coffee. Finish is sweet and syrupy. Too much maple syrup, cannot really tell this is a Baltic Porter.

750 ml bottle from Adam and the RS. Aroma is really maple forward with a doughy "French Toast" hint. The flavor is so forward with said maple. It is almost all maple notes. Syrupy texture. It amazes me on the vast difference between certain beers from this brewery. So great, so really, really not.
