UPDATED: NOV 1, 2012 Bottle. Pours dark almost black with tan head. Nose/taste is mostly vinegar, dark cherry vinegar, vinous notes and hints of chocolate with some vanilla/oak. Taste is heavy vinegar, some grain. Medium body.

Pours a dark chestnut brown color with mahogany edges and a half finger off-white head that quickly fades into a lasting ring. Spotty lacing left behind.
The aroma is dominated by a strong red wine barrel presence that gives off vinous fruits such as grape, plum and raisin which are complimented by earthy oak, sweet booze and peppery spice notes. Subtle medicinal presence along with some sweet malts but the barrel notes overpower most of the unpleasantness of the base beer.
Medium bodies with a really sweet vinous red wine flavor that lingers over the zesty spice and dark malts into a slightly dry finish. Slightly tart with a strong barrel presence that gives off oak,meed wine and lots of vikous dark fruit. Hints of grape, plum, date, fig and currant countered slightly roasted malt sweetness and peppery spice. Very subtle medicinal/syrupy presence with some caramel and toffee flavor. I found the regular 3 French Hens an undrinkable mess but the addition of stray grapes and red wine barrel aging have really toned things down. A bit heavy on the vinous fruit/red wine flavors but the overbearing alcohol and insane spiciness are kept in check. Complex, flavorful and pretty easy to drink considering how strong it is. Bottle at a dinner hosted by Patrick Rue at the Gingerman in NYC. Although this was quite fun to try, it is miserably over the hill. The fruity vinuous notes have degraded into a vinegar-ish tartness. The beer is nearly flat and a bit harsh.

Bottle, aged a few years. Deep purple hue, a short-lived medium-tan head. Raisiny aroma, molasses, marzipan, dates, booze. The acidity diesnt show up much in the nose, but it’s definitely there in the flavor. Dark dried fruits are prominent again, but paired with strong balsamic David and tart apple acidity. This bottle’s about three years old now, and it seems that the friity Belgian flavors are smoothing out while the tartnessaintaims its intensity. "a surprise appearance since i didnt even know this existed. i like the 3FH, but this took that beer to a whole nother level. big juicy syrah fruit and leather flavors atop an already pretty nice dark belgian strong. vinous and a little tart (though I would not class is as a sour as RB did)...just a barreled BSA. UPDATED: OCT 31, 2014 Bottle: Thanks, Kevin. Ruby tinted, dark brown chestnut body with a foamy beige & khaki head that quickly turns into a mild collar. Aroma of vinous red wine, red grape, soured dates & raisins, light vinegar, funky & musty oak, a light caramel malt base, hints of plum, & a slight lactic tartness. Flavor is tart, vinous, full of red wine reminders, red grapes, plums, raisins, all sorts of dark fruits underpinned by a lightly acetic & vinegery sourness. A touch of boozy wine near the finish, turning more sweet as the tartness fades. Unattenuation is apparent; mostly sweet & sticky dark fruit finish with light oaky must. Bottle shared by b3shine in late December ’13. Pours a hazy amber/copper color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have some sweet malts, tart berries, red wine, oak, hints of pepper, herbal character, interesting and I will try this again and update my rating. Old Ale Alpharetta rate. Big ripe fruits/berry, red wine, oak, a bit spicy, vinegar. Nice depth of flavors, but the vinegar touch isn’t my favorite.
