COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
There are two kinds of authentic Altbier- "Northern" and "Dusseldorf". These German brews are the original Ales of their regions and broadly speaking are bronze and bitter and reflect the "old" (Alt!) manners of brewing and lagering. Our Altbier enjoys aspects of both styles without being specific to one or the other and a touch more Spalt aroma hop than perhaps the style has usually offered. Drinking at 4.8% its a good candidate for pondering why there arent more Altbiers out there.

Pour is a clear amber with a large white head. Aroma is a neutral malt grain with not a lot of bitterness. Flavor is a nice earthy malt with some dark fruit like plum. A very sessionable lager with just enough flavor to keep things interesting.

Keg at the brewery, 12/17/16. Clear dark brown, large creamy tan head, good retention. Aroma of toffee, caramel, raisin. The taste is raisin, bitter hops, caramel. Medium bodied, mild lingering bitterness.

Tasted on tap at pub in nonic glass. It poured a nice clear amber colour with sudsy white foam. Grainy, caramelly, bready, herbal, hints of toffee and toast. Mildly fruity esters. Measured hoppy balance, subtle bitterness, light mineral essence. Light-medium body and carbonation, clean dry finish. Tasty and true-to-style.

(pint at brewpub) reddish brown (dark for an alt). Aroma of grainy/caramel malt. Bready malt flavor. I like the fact that Civil Life has a nice variety of session beers, but not sure Id have guessed this was an alt.

Tap @ The Civil Life. Pours a clear, deep reddish orange appearance with a tan head. Rich caramel, thick malty, toffee, a bit herbal nose. A touch fruity, pretty well balanced sweetness, goopy caramel, toasty malty flavor. Some fruity elements as well. Pretty good brew.

Sampled at an esbls tasting. Clear red brown. No head. This is grainy and resiny. Big barley and rye notes. A little thin but not bad at all.

It poured a crystal clear, dark reddish brown color with an off-white head. The aroma was a nice crisp and balanced nose with some cereal and a little grassy hoppiness. The taste was about typical for a good alt; toasty, bready, a bit sweet from the chocolate and fruitiness. Very tasty.

Pours brown with a reddish hue and a thick soapy head. The aroma has berries, caramel, toast, cream and sweetness. It has a medium crisp body with a moderate amount of carbonation. The flavor begins with toasty malt, woodiness, berries, floral aspects and some spice. The finish has more fruitiness, perfume hops, dry crackers, bready malt and a trailing bit of toffee and caramel. Interesting take on an alt. Another well done beer by Civil Life.
