Long enough ago, all beer wouldve been brownish because of the difficulty of drying the malted grain without darkening it. Same was true in America until the fancy-pants German immigrant brewers started brewing pale lagers which eventually took over. Thankfully, American homebrewers and a few bold craft brewers like us have revived American Brown Ale for your pleasure. Malty, caramelly, tart and toasty, earthy and citrusy, with delicious hints of bitter chocolate and dark roasted coffee.

Yknow that story about the hypocrite who tattled to President Abraham Lincoln about General Grants drinking? Ol Abe answered, Well, find out what hes drinking so I can send a barrel to every general in the army. Were pretty sure Grant was drinking The Civil Life American Brown.

Draft. Rich ruby red color, soapy and wet lace. Flavors of chocolate cake batter and raisins, but with out sweetness. Nor is it ever bitter, more a bit pithy. Finishes with some vaguely bitter, cleansing chalk. An almost impossible amount of flavor and layering for a 4.8 ABV ale.

12oz can. Unfiltered burgundy-brown body. Foamy, steady, beige head. Medium bodied, very true to style. Sweet, some serious malt depth. Pretty straight down the middle. Well executed.

On tap at Pi Pizzeria. Hazy orange body with slight head. Nose is malty, spice. Taste malty, sweet with plenty of hop and citrus in there too. Fair enough.

Keg st BBs - St. Louis. Pours mostly clear brown with a frothy, off-white head. The aroma holds lightly toasty brown bread, chocolate malts, faint roast. Medium sweet flavor with nice brown bread character, impressions of cocoa, mellow earthy bitterness. Light to medium bodied with average carbonation. Great balance on the finish, with further toasty cocoa, some earthy bitterness, dried berries, faint burnt toffee. Overall, a very tasty and accessible brown ale.

Served to me in a pint glass. Asked the waitress to check the beer I thought it was a porter. Its a good porter a bad brown ale.

On tap at Burger Tap Shake at Washington Circle, pours a murky dark orange with some creamy, white head. Nose is OK, gristy, some bread crust, a little brown sugar, some yeast, a little vinous hop. Flavor is fine, a bit hoppier than a standard brown with some lemon and a little soap, but then mostly malt, a little whole wheat flour, bread crust, mild dough. Dry finish. Just OK.

Tastes bold and roasty, yet creamy with a bit of hops at the end. Looks great, palate is surprisingly substantial for such a low ABV beer. I would definitely drink this again.
