Opaque, dark brown with fine khaki head and good lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, toffee, cocoa, coffee and a hint of orange. Taste of dark roasted malt, cocoa, coffee, orange, toffee and nuts. Just sweet enough to temper the intense roasty flavors. Medium body and medium carbonation.

Draft pint that I’ve had several times as this is apparently Civil Life’s flagship brew. Appears brown with small head that retains some character. Aroma senses nuttiness and a caramel-earthy blend. The palate is a tad heavy for the style, but still medium in body and not overly carbonated. Soil and unsweetened brown sugar (if this description makes sense) flavors are prominent to let you know this ain’t no watered down brown ale. This is not quite a session brown for me, but it is very good stuff. TylerGreenDC (953) - - APR 16, 2017
Draft. Rich ruby red color, soapy and wet lace. Flavors of chocolate cake batter and raisins, but with out sweetness. Nor is it ever bitter, more a bit pithy. Finishes with some vaguely bitter, cleansing chalk. An almost impossible amount of flavor and layering for a 4.8 ABV ale. ibrubeer (383) - Omaha, Nebraska, USA - FEB 1, 2017
Draft at Marriott STL. Light malty aroma. Dark brown color, opaque. White head, little lacing. Great malty taste, brown malts. Low bitterness. Very appropriate body, a little thin. Overall, a very good brown ale. Drake (13728) - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA - DEC 22, 2016

12oz can. Unfiltered burgundy-brown body. Foamy, steady, beige head. Medium bodied, very true to style. Sweet, some serious malt depth. Pretty straight down the middle. Well executed. altonbrownd (5897) - Chevy Chase, Maryland, USA - AUG 31, 2016
On tap at Pi Pizzeria. Hazy orange body with slight head. Nose is malty, spice. Taste malty, sweet with plenty of hop and citrus in there too. Fair enough. Leighton (21239) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - MAY 15, 2016
Keg st BB’s - St. Louis. Pours mostly clear brown with a frothy, off-white head. The aroma holds lightly toasty brown bread, chocolate malts, faint roast. Medium sweet flavor with nice brown bread character, impressions of cocoa, mellow earthy bitterness. Light to medium bodied with average carbonation. Great balance on the finish, with further toasty cocoa, some earthy bitterness, dried berries, faint burnt toffee. Overall, a very tasty and accessible brown ale. Served to me in a pint glass. Asked the waitress to check the beer I thought it was a porter. Its a good porter a bad brown ale.
