This is a review of British Bitter, I contend it is more of a true bitter and not the same beer as Civil Life’s English Pale Ale (4.2% ABV). Cask on draft poured into an imperial nonic glass.It appears bright copper in color and possesses a softbeige head that leaves it markings on the glass. Aroma is of straw, but with =out the greeniness often associated with it. Body is light, texture is somewhat creamy juxtaposed with mineral qualities. Tastes like gently baked biscuits. Tasted on tap at the brewpub in a nonic half-pint glass. It poured a mostly clear deep amber with thin but persistent white foam, tight little bubbles and lots of fine lacing. Nice English ale aromas: grainy, earthy, mildly citrusy, faint ripe fruit esters. Intensely biscuity flavour, toast, caramel. Nice bready mouthfeel, just the slightest bit chalky with tea-like tannins. Medium body and carbonation, lingering multi-layered aftertaste. From cask at the source. Pours a hazy orange with a thin off white head. Caramel aroma,. Taste is sweet caramel malt, bread dough, buttery character and mild hops. Nice.

tap at brewpub october 2011-pours dark amber with a small slightly off white fizzy head. nose is slightly nutty, spicy and some metallic qualities. a lite husky cereal note was also apparent. flavors exhibit the husky qualities mostly with a touch of carmel and nuts. not a bad brew. simple, clean and straight forward. vyvvy (6515) - Florissant, Missouri, USA - NOV 18, 2011
On tap at the brewpub - Pours deep brown with a large soapy beige head. The aroma has smooth toasty malt and dry caramel / toffee. Medium crisp grainy body with modest carbonation. Draft at the brewery. Labeled "English Best", 4% ABV. Pours a nice cloudy amber color with a finger-thick off-white head that leaves some lace in the glass. Aroma of toasted barley malts, grassy hops, cereal, and Cream of Wheat. Flavor of grassy hops, orange peel, cereal, earth, and toast. Light-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a toasty, subtly bitter mouthfeel. Really nice ESB. I enjoyed this one better than the English Bitter, the Gold one at 4.2%.
