To make a Milk Stout, we start with a fairly standard stout recipe--pale malt plus caramelized and roasted malts--then add lactose sugar which standard ale yeast cannot ferment, thus leaving more silky sweetness in the final beer…its je ne sais quoi as Steve Martin would say. Some folks compare the taste to chocolate milk, but what are we, babies? No! Imagine if you will a well-made macchiato, or rich dark chocolate bar with actual toasted cacao nibs, crème brulee, maybe a shot of rum, and just a hint of honey-soaked tobacco smouldering in a knurled hardwood pipe. Now we’re drinking like grown-ups. And at a sessionable 4.4% alcohol, we can enjoy several pints while pondering the “what is the quoi?” question.

ABV: 4.4%

COLOUR: opaque dark brown colour with thin but persistent beige foam
BJCP STYLE: 13B. Sweet Stout
NOTABLE INGREDIENTS: authentic Maris Otter pale malt, Crystal and Carafa dark malts, lactose sugar, Chinook hops, English yeast

CanIHave4Beers (4273) - Pouring Bus, Iowa, USA - JUN 24, 2014
On Draught at the brewery

Pours basically black with a good head and some lacing on the glass.

The aroma is roasty & mild with some chocolate and some espresso.

The flavor is chocolaty with a touch of sweetness. The roasty malt is pretty dominant and I get a touch of smokiness from it as well. The beer has a little metallic tinge.

Thinking about it logically I love everything about this beer, but sometimes the heart wants what the heart wants, and when I was drinking this, I sort of didn’t want it.... but sort of did, weird

brokensail (16696) - Dublin, California, USA - JUN 24, 2014
On tap @ The Civil Life. Black pour with a tan head. Nose of roast, licorice, and toasted nuts. Slight vanilla, coffee, and dark chocolate. Nice dark fruit. Slight bitterness to the flavor. Lots and lots of roasted malt. Coffee, cocoa powder, some ash, and sweet dark fruit. Nice vanilla and molasses. Liked this one.
