The Duck-Rabbit Barelywine is the hoppiest of all the Duck-Rabbit brews. This is a Farmville-style Barleywine, crafted the way brewers in Farmville have always done. Loads of Amarillo hops give a piney citrusy bitterness that’s supported beautifully by a toffee malt backbone. ABV: 11.0%

12oz bottle, recent release. I bought this expecting a lot but I got was a poorly made barleywine with many of the trappings for the style. Lots of high alcohol astringency with cherry. Its just what I hate in a barleywine. A few sips and dumped it.

Bottle. Pours a dark red color with small beige head. Strong caramel malt aroma with toffee notes. Some citrusy hop characteristics as well. Pretty balanced flavor, but definitely showcases the hoppiness of this beer. The malty sweetness comes through as well. Full bodied with mostly hop notes up front and some sweetness in the finish. Very nice.

I was expecting a lot more out of this one. Aroma is fruit caramel and Sullivan’s. Flavor’s like nose, bittersweet, with a lingering bitter, boozy finish.

Where and how: bottle 355 ml, - tasting
Aroma: orange, peach and mango citrus like combination of fruity sugars with mild smooth alcohol heat.7+
Appearance :
Top: almost flat white fizz.
Base: hazy, cloudy amber bottom.
Palate : medium bodied, fizzy with average length.
Taste: smooth well rounded barley wine. Raspberry sugars with smooth refined alcohol. Solid sipper. Classic vibe of this style.

Bottle. Moderate to heavy roasted, caramel for the malt, light cooked orange for the hops, light dough for the yeast, with notes of tobacco, sherry, bourbon, and charred wood. Head is large, frothy turning creamy, beige with excellent lacing and is mostly lasting. Color is clear copper. Flavor starts moderately to heavily sweet and moderately acidic, then the long finish is lightly sweet and moderately to heavily bitter. Palate is medium to full, creamy, with a soft carbonation, a heavily astringent and drying finish with a little stickiness on the lips. The pronounced bitterness at the end may not be true to style for a Barley Wine but it balances this beer nicely

Bottle from 2006-2010. 12 oz. bottle, pours a hazy dark amber with a small beige head. Aroma is oxidized, with bready malt, toasted caramel and light sweetness. Flavour has quite a lot of alcohol, with caramel and dark fruits. Fairly oxidized, but not too intrusively so. Decent for such an old beer.

Caramelized malt and mash. Brown pour with decent head. Sweet and boozy finish. Good for style. Bottle.

Pours red-amber and clear (?) with a medium light tan head. Aroma is slightly sweet (maybe some mild molasses) with a fermented grain aroma. Taste, unlike aroma, is interesting with syrupy sweetfeed like grains up front followed by some hoppy tropical fruits that kinda dance around with the grains. That’s followed by an insidious bitterness that creeps in for the finish. American style for sure, but not what I would expect from a barley wine even if it is American style. The flavors just aren’t deep enough, but the alcohol is hidden well.

Bottle. Color was an auburn amber with only a wisp of head. Aroma of ripe roten fruit, caramel, earth and bacon. Malty, with some mild piney hops in finish. Lingers. Alcohol hidden. Fairly mild overall

Pour is a hazy copper with a average white head. Aroma Is a nice sugar plum with a bit of toffee and alcohol. Flavor is a big toffee and a full on assault of earthy malt. The mouth feel is a bit thick but has plenty of chewy molasses and toffee malt with a lot of dark fruit but also has a bit of hop bitterness. One of those beers where you can still taste it long after the swallow. The alcohol is no problem with this beer but it does give you a pleasant warming in the chest after each swallow.
