Keg Third of a Pint at BrewDog, Clerkenwell, London in Jan 2016 - Opaque Brown / Black in colour. Beige head. Spare lacing. Very Malty; roasty malts, oak, vanilla, dark chocolate, coffee, caramel. Fruity; dark fruits. Spicy. Moderate alcohol for ABV. Bittersweet roast oaky vanilla chocolate coffee malty throughout. Nice BA Impy Stout! (2016-01-16)

Bottle from the brewery. Lush looking, rich, oily very dark brown opaque beer with no head. Nose is dark chocolate, black coffee, vanilla, oak barrel, salty, sean air, little Marmite, roasted malt. Taste is malty, Marmite, dark chocolate, less pronounced coffee, roasted malt, oak wood, slight spice from the wood, slight saltiness. As always with Kernel barrel aged stuff the balance is great. Bottle. Aroma is whisky and marker pens. Roast, and booze. Quite boozy taste, lots of whisky, roast and chocolate. Good stuff.

Dark brown. Vinous, deep dark chocolate notes. Big chocolatey, light body, tons of port, a bit of oak, slightly boozy. Smooth rounded. Well executed.

Pours dark dark brown, quite flat and just a few brownish bubbles. Aroma is soft, cocoa and chocolate, bit of booze. Taste has a bit of booze kick, more chocolate and bit of nuttiness. Not too sweet but playing around with roast and charcoal bitterness. Some sour berry notes coming out just before the aftertaste. Pours an oil black color with a small beige head, which collapses to a fluffy ring of lacing, producing big bubbles at the rim of the glass.
Offers a very unique barrel characteristic on the nose with figs, candied cherries, peat and bitter chocolate, entangled into coconut shell and cinnamon. Very complex and well put together, the aromas produce a pleasant warmth, which gets balanced by the chocolate and toasted hazelnuts.
Very silk, but thin, on the tongue with only a hint of carbonation, lots of creamy chocolate and a very dry, long lasting alcoholic finish, which is a tad too powerful on the back end, as all other flavors slowly drop out, while the alcoholic barrel remains its zing.
Cherries from the nose are prominent on the palate as well, developing an alcohol soaked dryness instead of a glazed sweetness, soothed by bakers chocolate. Bitter chocolate adds to the dryness while producing a creamy softness, which fades too fast during the finish, revealing peat, earth and a licorice alcohol bite, establishing a long lasting dryness.
Misses some balance, as well as a thicker mouthfeel to handle the barrel impact properly. It is able to produce a nice sherry profile with some peat to it, which unfortunately is not enough to prevent the alcohol from taking over after the swallow.
