At CBC. Poured deep dark brown with a beige ring. Aroma of dark fruit, vinous, toasted malt. Full body, flavour of moderately sweet berries, lightly bitter.

Draft. A black beer with a dark brown head. The aroma has notes of roasted malt, alcohol, wood, and acetone. The flavor is sweet with notes of roasted malt, alcohol, bread, and wood, leading to a bitter finish.

Bottle pour at the brewery. Pours black with tan head. Roasted malts, dark chocolate, wood, red wine, ripe fruit. Sweet with some bitterness in the finish. Medium to full bodied.

Leighton (22304) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - APR 28, 2016
Bottle at home in London - picked up at the brewery. Pours pitch black with a creamy, beige head. The aroma has a lot of wood character, some ash, touches of dark berries, raspberry, earth, cocoa. Medium sweet flavour with a healthy dose of alcohol boost, bitter dark chocolate, cedar, ashy roast, dried berries. Full bodied, lightly chewy, with fine carbonation. Lightly warming on the finish, with moisture-sucking woody dryness, more dark berries, baking cocoa, scorched earth. Rich and flavourful, if a llittle rough around the edges - I think this one will soften and improve with a bit with more aging.

33cl bottle from the brewery, London. It pours a dark brown with almost no head. Aroma is rich red wine barrel, funky estery and medium sweet. Taste is also medium funky medium sweet with more notes I red wine horse blanket light band aid licorice dark chocolate with a lightly bitter boozy finish. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Overall, tasty

Bottle picked up at The Kernel, January 16, 2016. Label reads "Red Wine Burgundy BA" with 10.5% ABV. Clearly different from the one I tried at CBC 2015. Pours black with low tan head. Aroma of cherry, red wine barrels, chocolate, red and black berries. From the smell, I almost expect a tart taste... And speaking of taste, we’ve got a rich a chocolate and dark fruit sweetness up front followed by a light tart berry and grape finish, clear red wine here. Body is medium to rich, smooth with soft carbonation.

Tap @ CBC 2015. Pours black with low tan head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, whisky barrel, muscovado. Taste is rich, whisky sweet, slightly unbalanced. Rich, creamy body with soft carbonation.

Bottle from Kernel at 10.5%. It pours jet black with a small, bubbly tan head. The nose is rich, vinous, jammy fruits, red grape, charred wood, light lactic notes, chocolate and toast. The taste is remarkably smooth...slick, dark chocolate, charred wood, slightly burnt toast, warming alcohol, good fruity red wine character, blackcurrant jam on toast, dark chocolate, dark fruits and a touch of cracked black pepper with some oak on the finish. Fulsome body, fine carbonation and slick mouth - feel. The wine character is well integrated with the base beer. Rich, slick and very well-balanced. Tasty stuff.

10.5% Impy Brown Stout London 1856 late 2015 version. Beer from the brewery and drunk at home. Black beer lasting tan head. Red wine aroma is quite strong. Good pinot noir aroma. It’s a lovely dark chocolate red wine, pinot noir mix. More barrel ageing than I would normally like in a beer but this is clearly the beer of the day, given 20 beers in Bermondsey, this is awesome. Love the red wine mixed with an intense dark choc flavoured stout. I’ve always liked the Impy Brown Stout from Kernel and this barrel ageing works perfectly. The odd thing is do I want to drink the wine from the barrel rather than the beer? Probably. But the base beer is really solid and I really like the barrel ageing. Big thumbs up. I liked it very much.

Keg @The Hanging Bat, Edinburgh (Ratings Backlog, Kernel takeover the taps) Pours dark brown almost no head but a slight off white lacing. Nose is wine, wood, oak, fruity red wine. Taste is more of the same but with added chocolate and some slight coffee.

Bottle at Danish Ratebeer Summer Gathering 2015, Ulfborg. Pours near black with a small ring beige head. Aroma of oak, vinous red wine notes, dark chocolate, roast, coffee, overripe dark fruit, caramel and malt. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter. Full bodied with soft carbonation.
