Pours a wonderful dark orange. Got nice Vanguard hops. There is fruity taste, even hint of plum. But it is the great smoky flavour that makes this special.

(On Tap) Cloudy deep amber brown with slightly off-white head. Beautiful smokey aroma, smooth and rich. Medium body, with light carbonation and somewhat unusual silky mouthfeel. Pleasant underlying taste with quite rich malt and nice fruit hops, overlaid with a distinct but not overwhelming smokiness. Tap at The Monk. Pours chestnut amber with a small, firm white head. Nose is perfectly balanced bacon and doughy yeast. Smoke driven salted meats in unison with perfect balance throughout and a lengthy, dry and slightly bitter finish. Smoke is never too much. Superb beer

On draught @ The Monk, Fremantle.
Produces up a radiant, russet chestnut that shimmered and sparkled when held up to the low lighting of the al fresco here at night. The head is held proud atop; a massing, tight off-white pad that frosts the glass well. Big, full aroma dominated by rauch malt that conjures up images of a French farmhouse charcuterie - very rustic and almost seductive. Along with the salty smoked meat come nuances of thickly smoky peat, salted plums, burnt sugar and fresh strapped leather. Good body, meaty, well rounded and building of a grandish presence inside. The carbonation is a mere prickle upfront that softens to a satiny, creaminess as it heads south. A ground-sweeper of a beer that simply oozes peaty, smoky malts and smoked, salted meats not meant to be perceived in a beer with a husky, ashen and well spiced backend. Pleasant sweet tang of plums, like that in the aroma, seems to tease the tongue and leave a residual essence between mouthfuls. The finish is dry, long and lingering - lip smacking and obscenely refreshing. It gets better as it warms; a sip is good, a skol is better. One of the best Rauchbiers I have tried. Moorish!

On tap at the Monk, Fremantle April 2012. Sweetish red fruit and smoky malt and grassy hop aroma. decent Rauchbier character, with flavours of fatty bacon, more fruit and a moderately bitter finish. Enjoyable.
