COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This traditional German Schwarzbier is a black lager that will surprise you. We used a special malt that is dehusked before roasting so the finished beer is light and drinkable with hints of chocolate, but without the harsher roasty flavor of a stout. It makes for one heck of a smooth beer. Winner of the Silver Medal for the Schwarzbier cartegory at he the 2010 Great American Beer Festival!

Bottle from Leary’s. To snifter it pours a auburn darkish brown with a trim off-white ringed head. Smells and tastes of raisins, milk chocolate, soil, caramel apples and rubber. Ends with plastic, flower pedals and moss. A lot better than how I was thinking it’d be.

porterhouse (1580) - Boothbay, Maine, USA - AUG 6, 2011
(22 oz. (bottled 5/11) from Ipswich Beverage) Pours very dark brown, about three fingers of tan head that recede a bit to a lasting cap. Aroma of chocolate, vanilla, caramel and a sourish-metallic tinge. Mouthfeel a bit milk-shakey/creamy but thinnish and lightly prickly and coats the palate a bit. Well-retained but broken, weepy rings of lacing. Flavor of dark and milk chocolate mixed with some caramel. Mildly bitter. Bit of brown sugar maybe. A bit of a detracting sour note towards finish. Basically just OK.
