4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours black with a nice khaki head. Aroma is smoked malts and hop bitterness. Taste has a sweet vanilla like note to start but fades to some citrus like juiciness from the Cascade hops. Really smooth mouthfeel but still has a nice lively carb. Way more complex than I was expecting.

Occasionally I’m struck by the oddity of our rating system here on RB. Here’s a brew that mainly scores 3.5 and up, with a few dissenters. These numbers generally get you an 80 to 90 range rating, but this stout gets a 65. Weird. In any event, big can into a Belgian ale glass. Pours a very dark brown with reddish hints. Aroma of coffee and roasted malt, flavor much the same with a bit of vanilla and molasses. The alcohol is truly nowhere in evidence. There is somewhat of a burnt taste involved here, which is a bit of a black mark. I would call this a decent, mid-range imperial but nothing special... and give it an 85. jimhilt (2626) - Bow, New Hampshire, USA - FEB 5, 2017
Pours a two-finger brown head that fades slowly leaving traces of lace. Black color, no highlights. Light-medium carbonation and medium bodied. Burnt chocolate nose and flavor is burnt chocolate with a burnt/bitter after taste. $6.49 for a 22oz bottle from Julio’s Liquors Westborough, MA. Taster at the source pours dark cola with a nice mocha head. Aromas of roasted malt chocolate vanilla and coffee. Taste is roasted malt coffe chocolate. SlovakSniper (5561) - Candiac, Quebec, CANADA - FEB 19, 2016
Pours dark brown with a thick tan head. Aroma hints at coffee but flavors of roasted chocolate.

8/04/2011: Haverhill Brewery Joshua Norton Imperial Stout... Aroma: Thin milk chocolate syrup with some roasted malt in the background. Appearance: Pours an opaque dark brown color with a purple hue; beige bubbles on the surface. Flavor: Sweet, but with a dark chocolate flavor infused with leafy, earthy, slightly citrusy bitterness (moderate level); roasted/charred malt; dry, roasty (think coffee) finish. Palate: Average body and mouthfeel. Overall: Drinks more like a "regular" stout, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing; goes down easy and keeps my interest piqued.
1 pint 6 fluid ounce bottle (Bottled in October 2010) shared by alexsdad06. Thanks Brad! Rating #58 for this beer.
wasn’t to sure about this one, the label for one- is a bit creepy .. . pours a dark brown plum .. . light foam, only spots of lacing .. . mild roast, alcohol, and burnt ashy brandy .. . very transparent, didn’t like this .. . . i really should monitor my impulse control. colour me embarrassed. alexsdad06 (10803) - West Chester, Ohio, USA - APR 6, 2013
Bottle from Santa in 2011 (consumed in August 2011). Pours a dark brown with reddish highlights and a small beige head. The aroma has roasted malts, hints of coffee, chocolate and a very mild smoky note. The flavor is big roasted malts to the point of being charred, coffee, dry bitterness with only hints of chocolate. Not enough body to this. kirk36 (223) - Peabody, Massachusetts, USA - JAN 31, 2013
A bit watery but overall half way into the glass the body appears. Coffee notes, bitter, black appearance and low carbonation. Good but there exists better examples. Maybe I should take e the label advice and cellar it...
