Pours a deep brown colour with a thick white head. tastes of malts with a hint of liquorice. A very good example of an English real ale. brewed on site in Christchurch Jimthechap (2064) - Christchurch, NEW ZEALAND - DEC 9, 2006
It’s the sort of beer that you’ll either finish or it’ll finish you. Very much a comfort beer and especially good in winter when poured correctly. Not a beer for the faint of heart, this is a beer with class. OStreetBrewery (120) - Wellington, NEW ZEALAND - MAY 2, 2007
Served from beer engine with sparkler attached at the Prince Albert in Nelson. Poors a sligtly hazy liqourish black with a thick white head. Fresh aromas of tangy fruit and woody aniseed. On the palate there is more tangy hop flavour , hop driven acidity and a hint of malt biscuit and chocolate leading into as firm bitter finish. Great beer and one which seems to defy stylistic boundarys. DuffMan (10549) - the land of bitumen, beef & beer, Alberta, CANADA - MAY 24, 2009
Part of the tasting tray shared with my lovely wife at the brewpub in Christchurch, enjoyed with the charcouterie plate and cheese plate. Gorgeous deep mahogany red colour. Aroma is faintly smokey, with notes of molasses, chocolate, and fig jam. Silky palate with flavours of burnt malt, molasses, prunes, and a subtle spiciness in the finish. Nice bitterness that lingers long after the swallow. This reminded me of an old-school classic porter, and for that reason was my favourite of the lot. davidm (2080) - Sunnyvale, California, USA - APR 25, 2010
Tap. Nice beer. Sweet aromas of cola, and caramel. Taste is sweet, with good length. Palate is velvety, with a medium body. Brown, with a head that doesn’t last.

Opens like a mouthful of caramel pop corn, loverly brown-reddish colour and clear, malty yeasty nose, not at all carbonated but good body and nice malty aftertaste.
Nicely complex. Brodies_Best (269) - Auckland Central, NEW ZEALAND - OCT 2, 2013
Pours dark with tan head. Coconut aroma. Smooth creamy taste and aftertaste. Well balanced. Very easy to do drink. greig (253) - Hamilton, NEW ZEALAND - AUG 17, 2007
On cask at the pub. This beer reminds me of Fuller’s ESB on steroids. It pours a reddish brown with a creamy white head. On the palate, big caramel flavours with a note of warming alcohol, some biscuity malt, and a silght woodyness, as if it had been oak aged. A hint of vanilla rounds out the solid bitter finish. monsterc (13) - Illinois, USA - APR 9, 2011
Bottle poured brown with a huge thick creamy head that lasted the entire beer. Sweet malty hops aroma. Flavor is creamy malts, a very good beer! lisagirl (264) - Christchurch, NEW ZEALAND - APR 2, 2013
beeeeaauuuuuuutiful. delicious roast malts, touch of coffee perhaps, with more fruity hops up on top. nice balance struck between the lighter hops and the darker roasts. yum yum.
