This looked in all parts like an oatmeal stout and it had the thin mouth feel of an oatmeal stout but an oatmeal stout it was not. The nose was that of a rauchbier which was wonderful and the flavors that followed were along the same line. Very smokey flavors but none of the subtle oatmeal at all. Not sure what happened here, but it was good.
Sample #7 at brewpub. Opaque deep brown with frothy khaki head. Aroma of semisweet chocolate and cola. Taste is moderately sweet, chocolate cola with a lightly bitter finish. Umami, maybe even a bit salty. Light body with smooth texture and light carbonation. Overall: okay. After the initial train wreck these last few have come together better. arnold931 (1263) - Iowa, USA - APR 13, 2014
Tap at Third Base. Pours black with a little red at the edges. Thin tan head that dissipates quickly. Just a little coffee in the nose. Some chocolate and coffee in the taste. Tastes better as it warms up. tronraner (2459) - Walland, Tennessee, USA - SEP 18, 2011
Draught at the brewpub. Pours reddish black with tan head. rich chocolate and coffee aroma with some almond notes. The flavor is bitter chocolate with a South American coffee note. Very silky mouthfeel. I notice a slight Craisin note after a few sips. Not too shabby. iabeerguy (392) - Iowa, USA - AUG 2, 2010
Had this at the brewpub. This beer pours black with a medium tan head . Nice line of lacing on the glass. Roasted coffee aroma smell with malts/caramel. Creamy flavor of roasted malt and coffee along with some chocolate. Decent overall. eager25 (6) - Independence, Iowa, USA - AUG 20, 2009 does not count
Strong coffee aroma with a short lived head. Good flavor with a lingering finish. Not as smooth as I like, but it’ll do if you need a dark beer fix drowland (8888) - Georgia, USA - AUG 18, 2009
Had on tap at the brewpub with my fiancee but unfortunately was eating dinner and didn’t take good notes. All I noted for this one was "Flawed." Dogbrick (13389) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - AUG 15, 2009
Sample at the brewpub. The beer pours black with a medium beige head that diminishes steadily. Stringy lacing on the glass. Roasted coffee aroma with notes of malt. Medium, creamy body with flavors of roasted malt and coffee along with some sweet chocolate. The finish is short and roasty with a bit of coffee left behind. Decent overall. Black with a thin tan head. Flavors of oats, coffee, caramel, maple syrup, and smoke. Slightly bitter, decent hop kick. Good. SledgeJr (3577) - Omaha, Nebraska, USA - MAY 15, 2007
On tap at the brewpub. This is not retired. Simply the brewpub changed its name to Third Base Bar & Brewery. Same brewer, same beer, same recipe. They claim that they brew this beer with 50 pounds of oatmeal in every batch. If that is true, they must be brewing a million gallon batch. I get no oatmeal smoothness or thickness of palate. It is dark brow/black like a stout, but the head is thin and whispy. Far too watery for the style, this merely musters up a burnt flavor to the taste.
