Smelled like candy. Very malty with some spiciness and bitterness. Full bodied very complex. heykevin (1287) - Decorah, Iowa, USA - NOV 6, 2001
Yuu want malt? here's your malt. A very good old ale. The premium line from Bell's is exceptional. TAR (2802) - Blue Ridge Mountains, North Carolina, USA - OCT 30, 2001
UPDATED: FEB 11, 2006 Ruby rust. Densely packed white foam. Loads of fruitiness, malt and caramel on the nose, with a few bitter hops in there as well. Abundance of slickly fruity esters and candied apple flavors absorb the understated earthy hop, firm bready malt finish. Pretty good. tourette (225) - Seattle, Washington, USA - OCT 22, 2001
Great barley wine. Very complex. I bet this would incredible aged......... Viking (9) - x, Indiana, USA - OCT 16, 2001 does not count
I didn't really care too much for this beer. However, I hear it improves with age. I'll pick up some more soon, and drink it in a year...

Although barley wines/old ales, are not one of my favorite styles. This offering was surprisingly pleasant. Aroma of caramel, deep caramel, and toffee flavours. Slight hop flavour in the end with a smooth malt finish. Alcohol flavours are not over powering. Zach Diesel (905) - Sisters, Oregon, USA - JAN 30, 2001
One word...AWESOME! mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!.......... P-tor44 (886) - Anchorage, Alaska, USA - JAN 30, 2001
Oh my god, so good. Deep amber color, most appatizing beer i've seen. So complex, some oats. a complex aftertaste. unreal. Larry Bell is a genious, this may be his finest beer. Oakes (19569) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - SEP 16, 2000
UPDATED: AUG 4, 2004 Slightly murky amber. Toffee, nuts, raisins and just plain rich malts in the aroma. Very rich and long flavour with big toffee notes and some strong alcoholic dryness. Bitterness clashes too much with the chewy maltiness.
