COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The rich darkness is not excessive as is sometimes seen in other craft iterations. A medium high hop flavor and aroma befits this style. The caramel and roasted malt flavors and aromas are enhanced with a well-controlled fruitiness.

Bottled. A red-brown beer with a lazing brown head. The aroma has notes of roasted malt, and hops. The flavor is sweet with notes of roasted malt, caramel, and hops, leading to a bitter finish. Thanks yespr for sharing.

Benzai (16751) - Oirschot, THE NETHERLANDS, NETHERLANDS - OCT 1, 2014
Bottle shared with Erwin Van Moll and Stefan @ Van Moll Brewpub. Nice dark red-brown color with a nice dark red glare coming through. Nice color, but not black as I expected. Small to average sized beige head. Aroma is lightly malts, oxidation, a hint of cocoa, a hint of leaves. Taste malts, lightly hops, leaves, lightly bitter. Decent body and carbonation.

Ferris (16692) - Burnaby, British Columbia, CANADA - SEP 29, 2014
Bottle - Roast malts and some cocoa with some toffee sweetness. Deep mahogany with a rich beige head. Roasted malts, bitter hops and a decent malty bitter, ashtray finish. Interesting and more on the malt side than the hops.

brokensail (16666) - Dublin, California, USA - AUG 7, 2012
Pours a very dark brown color with a khaki head. Not a bad nose. Some citrus and pine hop aromas with a touch of floral hop character, too. Definitely some chocolate to go along with the roast. Semi-sweet chocolate flavors along with roast. Citrus peel and pine hop notes give the beer (along with the roast) a moderate bitterness. A light grassy quality, too.

Ratman197 (15448) - Arvada, Colorado, USA - OCT 15, 2014
Bottle poured a clear dark reddish brown with a small lasting tan head. Aromas of roasted malt, cocoa, earthiness and a hint of pine. Palate was medium bodied and crisp with a dry finish. Flavors of roasted malt, cocoa, earthiness and light pine with a crisp dry lightly bitter lingering cocoa finish.

crossovert (14006) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - AUG 13, 2014
Draft. A PRetty hop-forward black ipa, the malt body is overshadowed by citrus hops.

3.8
deyholla (12439) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - JUN 19, 2012
Pours a dark brown with a light brown head that lasts throughout the beer. Aroma has a nice earthy pine note with backing dark grains and a roasted note that works nicely with the pine. Flavor is roasty throughout with more roast up front and an earthy pine note that comes out in the finish.

3.6
BVery (11385) - Plymouth, Minnesota, USA - JUN 17, 2012
Sampled at St. Paul Summer Beer Fest. Brown pour with a tan head. Not as dark as most black IPAs. Coffee and chocolate really pop out in this one - very nice.
