Retired? Guess it’s a good thing I found a bottle when I did!
Aroma is strong, malty and fruity. It pours a clear golden amber with a thick off-white head that does not stick around too long. Flavor does not quite match the aroma, being malty with a hint of fruit and a touch of hops but mostly unremarkable; still, it satisfies. Texture is smooth and tingly, rather typical. kevd193213 (992) - Hope Valley, Rhode Island, USA - JAN 10, 2010
12 oz bottle. Aroma of malt and faint caramel. Nice even, surprisingly full taste of malt, caramel and grass. sturmthis (1195) - Bavaria, GERMANY - MAY 18, 2014
On tap. Dark cooper color with white head. Malty taste with a slight biscuit taste. Dry aftertaste. Nothing special, but drinkable. jsquire (4601) - St. Marys, Ohio, USA - MAR 9, 2004
Deep golden color out of the bottle with a thin foamy white head that went away quickly. Some malt and citrus in the nose. There is some maltiness in the flavor with sublte citrus mixed with butterscotch, caramel and a little green pepper. This is a decent beer with a sandwich but is so much worst that the Elliot Ness as to barely seem in the same class. Nothing very interesting. dirtymike (2016) - Manchester, New Hampshire, USA - JUN 25, 2004
Hazy copper in color with a small white head. Sweet toasted malt aroma. Sweet caramel malt flavor, too sweet for my taste.

Bottle - possibly old. The aroma really surprised me - it had some! I am not really a lager guy, if you couldn’t tell. Nice, toasty malt aroma. Dirty gold body with next to no head. Just based on experience my guess would be that it was white. There was still some fizz - surprisingly - and this does hint it the typical lager. The flavor was quite complex for a lager. It started with the toastiness and through the swallow the sweetness comes through and really overpowers - too much. Numenor (871) - Richmond, Virginia, USA - APR 10, 2006
Golden-urine colored body. Grainy aroma, light malts... nothing much beyond normal mass-market swill. Far better taste, nice floral accents, some light hops and malts. Clean, sweet ending, better than mass-market swill. whaleman (2178) - North Wales, Pennsylvania, USA - APR 21, 2006
Hazy, deep golden body with a substantial yeast load and a pure white, loose soapy head. Aroma is syrupy sweet and smells like pale wort. Has notes of buttery nuts, flowers and biscuit dough. Flavor has sweet, nutty honey tones and seems a little underattenuated. Grain husks seem evident. Maybe the husky notes are for Balto. A lightly tart aspect lends some balance as does a spicy finish with some stealthy hop bitterness. Not something I would really care to revisit. hophead75 (2012) - Largo, Florida, USA - OCT 2, 2006
GABF 06. Aroma is caramel malts, and toasty malt. Taste is caramel and toasted malt, with a smooth finish. not bad. ganache (6057) - New Jersey, USA - OCT 28, 2006
Bottle. Rich caramel and toffee nose with light fruitiness. Mostly malt with a little chalky/cellary component, slightly toasty. Golden-bodied with a slight orange tint and creamy beige head. Taste restrains the toast a bit and allows the fruitiness to come to the fore. No bitterness, mild-medium sweetness. Thin body, even watery. Again, mostly malty, with caramel leading the way, and a hint of butter, light herbs and veggie and even a splash of honey. Good one.
