355ml bottle from New York. Vertical with Bourbon version. Pours pitch black with a light brown head. Aroma of roasty malts, licorice, coffee, chocolate and hints of hops. Taste is stingy roasty with some licorice, chocolate and hints of coffee. Finish is roasty with hints of licorice, chocolate and coffee. Okay, feels more balanced than the bourbon version.

lusikka (7813) - Tampere, FINLAND - MAR 12, 2016
330 ml bottle. Pours a dark brown, almost black colour with a small head. Aroma of rich roastiness, salty licorice, soy sauce and some herbal notes. Flavour of roasted malts, metallic notes, salty licorice, soy sauce and bread. Some spiciness. Medium bodied. Very dry mouthfeel.

seymour (2045) - Maplewood, Missouri, USA - MAR 4, 2016
Shared at the StlBrews meeting from a bomber bottle into a nonic half-pint glass. It poured opaque black with tan foam, lasting with lace. Malty, toasty, nutty, very roasty, boozy, with a firm hop bitterness. Some citrusy hop flavour but aroma was mainly burnt grain. Simultaneously mellow and tart. Medium body and carbonation. Well-rounded mouthfeel, some gritty chalk and ash, mineral water essence. Lingering toasty, bittersweet aftertastes. Very good, I can see why it’s an award-winner.

ExpendableHero (924) - Florida, USA - FEB 19, 2016
Almost black beer with a brown head. Aromas of roasted coffee and oats. Tastes of dark licorice, dark chocolate, roasted coffee, and oat. Oily and creamy mouth feel. Very easy to drink with a bittersweet, lactic finish. Delicious.

Turboninja (763) - Tampere, FINLAND - FEB 10, 2016
[email protected], Whole Foods, Cleveland, USA. Strong aroma with licorice and bourbon. Alcohol clearly at background. Pitch black color with light/medium beige head. Strong, averagely balanced taste with plum, licorice and hint of sweet malts. Alcohol clearly in the background. Wide taste spectrum with long aftertaste with licorice. Medium/light body with light/medium carbonation. Overall, slightly messy, more sweet than malty. Seductive Siberian Night.

FROMTHEBOTTLE (77) - Ontario, CANADA - FEB 4, 2016
12oz bottle. Pour is not as dark as one would imagine. Opaque black with brown tints. Head is rather thin. Heavy aromas of cocoa, bakers chocolate and roast everything, Malts, nuts, coffee, caramel. Finish is a little dry with slight bitterness. 9.7%abv is well balanced with all the flavors of this full bodied beer. Not much to complain about or improve on. Wish I had picked up a second one.

ryanscourt (1474) - Latrobe, Pennsylvania, USA - FEB 3, 2016
Thick bodied; milkshake feel in the mouth. Nice chocolate taste. Enjoyable, would be great with ice cream

tekstr1der (490) - New Hampshire, USA - JAN 30, 2016
Pours black with minimal tan head. Aromas are heavy roast, baker’s chocolate. Flavors follow similarly. Not much sweetness to this one, it’s fairly dry. Full of roast, with a dry coffee-like finish, it’s good for the style. Alcohol is very well hidden.

ryecatcher (1445) - Bridgeport, Chicago, Illinois, USA - JAN 23, 2016
Bottle. Deep stouty brownish-black pour, opaque with a massive espresso colored froth, ridiculous retention and lace. Nose is dark roasted barley, coffee, cocoa, hazelnuts, malts. Mouth is big and creamy, bittersweet, coffee, roast, nutty, bakers chocolate, some soot near the finish. Goes down dangerously easy for a 9.7%. Woof.
