4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Clear dark amber pour with a deep dark ruby cast. Nice head and lacing that retains for 3 minutes. The nose is bourbon over sweet dark fruit, mostly plum and raisin, coupled with notes of vanilla, caramel and oak over molasses. Almost full bodied with a very rich creamy texture. The superb flavor profile is complex, yet balanced. Unlike Founder’s Backwoods Bastard, bourbon doesn’t predominate. You get a complex balance of bourbon against the flavors of the nose. It begins with the dark fruit, progresses to the caramel and molasses based sweetness, then bourbon and the associated vanilla and oak notes. The finish is a smooth bourbon forward sweetness counter balanced with an oak astringency that flows into that nice alcoholic burn at the back of the throat. Compared to FBB, the Wulver wins by a nose for the Wee Heavy title.
Deep dark plummy amberish brown under a thin light beige head. Stupendous aroma of caramelly whiskey and lots of oak and a bit of brown sugar and dark chewy Scottish malts. Big full warm flavor that's soft and dark malty sweet with notes of plum and date with nice woody vanilla tones, a little roast char, sweet warming sugary bourbon, and a kiss of cocoa. Delightfully woody and warm and complex as, tasty to boot, full of dark belgianish malty fruity tones like raisin and date, but with a mellow bourbon undertone throughout. ganache (6035) - New Jersey, USA - JUL 2, 2017
Foiled bottle. Nose is a clear ten for me: luscious deep malt, rich and oaky, Bourbon, smoke, touch of toast, deep coffee and chocolate, light whiskey lactone, caramel, subtle red berry and spice. Pour medium-brown that collects to deep, dark brown, cloudy and a little muddy; head fizzy yellow-tinged tan that quickly works itself to death. Taste strong in alcohol, slightly numbing, slightly rubbery low-medium bitterness, fire in the throat from the alcohol but not too fierce, moderately dry, big caramel and toffee, not tart. Some of the great complexity of the nose has been mashed and smushed and subjugated to the generic Big Toffee at the beer’s center, only the spice seems to have intensified. Subtle tobacco, leather, deep smoke. Very smooth body but not soft, not crisp, not oily, just a hair above flat. Dark and brooding aftertaste with black malt and roast, coffee only at the margins, but no cocoa or chocolate there. Certainly barrel character enough, though not what the opening salvo of aromatics heralded. Ultimately I don’t think I’d buy again, but I know some cigar lovers who might. 12oz bottle gifted by Pruf, thanks Chris. A good deal of alcohol on this beer but does not come of as spirit or barrel heat. A little thin on the palate. Sweet leafy earth candy otherwise. Low hop. Lots of lacing from the head. fischersfriend (34) - Statesville, North Carolina, USA - JUN 22, 2017
Aroma, bourbon and more bourboan with a hint of oak.
Appearance, flat cola no head cola color.
Taste, bourbon, oak, vanilla, coconut. Not sure which is predominate as they all seem equal.
Palate, flat cola smooth, sorty heavy.
Overall. Did Barrel aging is a big part of the flavor component bourbon Oak vanilla coconut quite tasty especially if you like bourbon .However, in my opinion The Bourbon Barrel aging process although it adds flavor takes away from the style. You like Bourbon Barrel aged Brew they certainly nailed it that’s for a Scottish Wee Heavy not so much. drpimento (3736) - La Crosse, Wisconsin, USA - APR 1, 2017
Outstanding beer. Aroma’s malty, toffee, caramel, burnt sugar, hint of peat. Flavor’s mainly sweet, but not too overly so, as it’s cut nicely by carbonation, peat and a bit of bitter. Excellent body and finish.

355ml bottle (thx, Yannick!) at Alex’s. Pours a hazy copper with a tan head. Aroma is is lots of bourbon, dark fruits, chocolate, boozy. Taste is the same. Very good. Maybe just because I do very like good bourbon barrel aged beers? :-)
