Aroma: smoke, chocolate, roasted malts - all a little understated. Taste followed the nose very well but with a nice hint of yeast. Good body, good finish. Would buy again.
Growler. Poured black with a creamy tan head that settled to a ring and left light lace. Aroma of chocolate, roast, and a backing of Belgium yeast. 750ml from Sam’s, Durham. The bottle actually lists a 10% abv. Dark, coppery pour with a fairly minimal carbonation, a few big bubbles perhaps but not much liveliness to the body. Not much in the way of aroma, with mild smoke and roast notes detectable amidst a generic seeming ripe yeast and chocolate base. Taste has more presence, but not necessarily in the positive sense: there’s a distinct dry metallic note in there, which compromises the bitter hops, dark choc, and yeasty finish. pours black with 2 fingers of tan head. a little bit of cocoa, and touches of hop on the nose. On the palate I get a little bitter cocoa and hop. Body is very thin.

Pour is a black with a small tan head. Aroma is a decent roasted malt with some coffee scents. Flavor is chocolate with a nice smoke and coffee. I don’t know what is supposed to be Belgian about this but as a porter it is pretty decent. maniac (3800) - Baltimore, Maryland, USA - SEP 17, 2010
On tap at the River City Beer Festival at the Diamond on 05/22/2010 as Dark Monk. Dark brown body with a large frothy tan head. Sweet roast, some black malt, and a bit of hop bitter aroma. Dry bitter flavor, some dark malt, roast, and black malt. Slightly astringent. Medium body with moderate carbonation.

Growler from Whole Foods Market, Glen Allen, VA. Pours a pitch black color with a thin head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, smoke. Very dry. The taste is very dry roasted malts, nutty notes, chocolate, a bit of smoke and just a hint of a sweet caramel note in the finish. Leafy hops. Medium bodied. It pours almost black with a light tan head. The nose has notes of smoke, caramel, and roasted malt. The flavor has those roasted malt notes, a hint of chocolate, and a solidly bitter backbone contributes a earthy hop prescence. Medium bodied with smooth carbonation and a medium to long, bitter finish. Overall it was a pretty tasty brew that is worth a go.
