March 7th, 2014 - The Thorn St. Relay IPA was a prize from a first date at a bar, bringing home a growler to satisfy the introvert who paid his dues to the extrovert side. It’s a pretty beer, rusty and richly brown, with a soft head, barely visible, of chunky bubbles. The smell is similarly rusty and even tangy, like Elmer’s glue, with notes of pineapple and bitter leafy greens. It’s a curious combination, but works in an IPA, where the hoppy bitter notes can contend with the odd menagerie of scents. The flavor, by comparison, is mild, but again, tangy and rusty, with a return of the pineapple sweetness I found in the scent. The palate is left underwhelmed, however. That soft, lazy head portended a soft and quiet palate, both at the beginning and the end. It’s not enough support for the flavors, which seem to fall heavily through the flimsy body. Thus, good flavors, infirm mouth feel. rlgk (18847) - Göteborg, SWEDEN - NOV 6, 2015
