Borefts Beer Festival IV. Day 1. Opaque black beer, little pale tan head. Light dry crispy palate. Very mild dark malts. A little lactose. Super mild whisky. Semi dry finish. A bit wishy washy for a BA beer but all right overall.
On tap at Borefts 2012, Bodegraven. Pours deep brown with a fine, off-white bubble head. Good dark bread nose with sturdy whisky character. Medium sweet flavor with some dark fruits, dark toasted bread, definite whisky barrel. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Moderate whisky character to finish, nice smoked malts, very subtle chocolate. Exceptionally well balanced beer, and impressively nuanced given the relatively low ABV. Medicinal menthol aroma. Nice black, small loose head. Soft palate, a little flat. Simple rich roast in the taste. Only fills out in the finish. Also better as it warms, so maybe good as a slow sipper, even though it has no sign of alcohol at all. Which means that it’s a nice sweet roasty glugger too, if that’s your thing. Smokiness took a long time to appear. Whisky nicely well in check, provinding a feel, but not a taste, of the barrel.
Draught @ Borefts 12. Very dark brown color, almost black but a slight dark red glare comes through. Small sized, fair lcagin, mostly diminishing off-white head. Moderately malty aroma, lightly yeasty, smoke. Taste malts, smoke, lightly roasted malts, lightly bitter. Low to medium body, a bit watery texture, soft almost flat carbonation. Cask at IMBC 2013. It puts near. Lack with a medium light tan head. The roasty, wood, whisky, caramelized sugar and vanilla. The taste is smooth roast, coffee, chocolate, good deal of whisky character, milk, mild bitterness, light medicinal notes and wood with a dry, roasty finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. Whisky dominates base beer, but tis still nice.
