Bottle from Cambridge Wine Merchants, Cherry Hinton Road. Purplish black and opaque. The small tan head disappears quickly. Gentle wood smoke sits alongside roasted coffee in the aroma. The taste is dominated by the sweet/savoury richness of the smoked malt. A bit of grainy bitterness in the finish. Thin body. It’s pretty good but not as a,along as if hoped it would be.

The beet pours a solid coca-cola colour with a very thin creamy brown head which lingers and laces well. The aroma is peat wood, roasted malt, coffee, and dark chocolate. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with average carbonation. The flavour is well balanced between a smoked malt flavour, coffee, and caramel notes. Tastes great!

lesifflebiere (1722) - Gatineau, Quebec, CANADA - APR 17, 2016

rauchbier (3814) - Isle Of Beer, Lincolnshire, ENGLAND - APR 17, 2016
Bottle, from Beer in a Bottle, Beverley. Deep red black, thin but sustained beige head and gentle condition. Initially sweet and smokey in the nose with hints of caramel and a muted roasted barley note, quite chalky in the mouth with a subdued sweet smokiness and hints of coffee beans and liquorice, there is a slight peppery spiciness and a little roasted bitterness, finish has some caramel sweetness, some warming alcohol and a touch of peatiness lingering.

Pours a fairly big thick frothy brownish head and has a dark brown appearance. Some good sticky lacing remains. Aromas of coffee, malts, hints of spices as well as vanilla. Flavours are sweet at first (caramel) and the smokey notes come through much more in the finish. Fairly smooth mouthfeel. Average retention.
