Bracia is the Celtic name for a beverage brewed in Iron Age Europe with reference found on a Roman inscription at Haddon Hall,Derbyshire. Little is known about this except it was high in alcohol, brewed with cereals and, most probably, honey. Thornbridges Bracia has been infused with a generous amount of dark and bitter Chestnut Honey. This was sourced by Head Brewer Stefano Cossi from Beekeeper Onelia Pin in the Alpine foothills of North East Italy. Aromas are of chestnut, honey, cappuccino, white chocolate, dark fruits, vibrant fresh peel. The mouthfeel is velvety and rich, with notes of coffee, chocolate, liquorice and hazelnuts with warming alcohol, cocoa and a little peat in the finish. Malts: Maris Otter, Brown, Munich, Dark Crystal, Black, Chocolate, Peated and Roasted Barley. Hops: Target, Pioneer, Hallertau Northern Brewer and Sorachi Ace. Bracia can be cellared for up to one year, maybe longer. Its flavours will evolve so why not enjoy the experience of opening a bottle every once in a while.

500ml bottle. Pitch black colour with late awakening, average to huge, frothy to creamy, half-way lasting, moderately lacing, brown head. Dark malty aroma has fruity notes of blue/dark berries, hints of milk chocolate, a touch of nougat, hoppy overtones. Taste is moderately sweet, intense dark malty, notes of treacle, chocolate, dark berries, liquorice, a touch of roast, a salty touch, cautious hints of peat, minimally bitter, herbal hoppy overtones, cautious hints of alcohol; slightly oily texture, sticky palate. Very rich and complex taste.

UPDATED: DEC 28, 2013 Bottle, 12C. Black with a tan head that fades to a coat, leaving spots of lacing. Aroma of hazelnuts, the forest floor, chocolate, cherries, twangy medicinal honey, the lodge. Silky mouthfeel, low carbonation. Sweet spiced chocolate, hazelnuts, autumnal detritus, coffee, cherries, complex toasty caramelised/ singed flavours. Cocoa and spices (anise, galangal, licorice, coriander root) linger, honey is more obvious. Bitterness creeps up. Alcohol is well-integrated, but it drinks like a strong brew. Brings to mind a large room - used only occasionally but well-maintained and stacked with seasoned wood - in the last sunny days before the fire must be lit. Spectacularly good. [4.6]

Went on a bit then, but yes, a really stunning beer. Dark, burnt, spicy gruit things, modern hops that should jar but dont at all. Mysterious herbal notes that pop in and out of prominence. Big and complex, but nothings that shouty and yet everythings well defined.

Bottle from Mane Liquor at the Thornbridge tasting. Pours oily black with a short, khaki head. Aroma of cocoa, caramel, and a sweet smokiness. Taste opens up a thick chocolate body with a nice roasty background, travels through the mouth with a touch of caramel and coffee, leaving a lingering aftertaste of cocoa and almost a caramel peat. A really pleasant, sweet smokiness. Proved to be different to the standard coffee/chocolate stout, good to see.

UPDATED: AUG 14, 2013 Bottle from Mane Liquor. Pours very dark with a small, sticky tan head. Nose shows smoke instantly. As it opens up, a fair bit of sweetness comes out but its a balanced sweetness. Almost like sweet hickory smoke with some heavy caramel and powdery chocolate in there too. Very complex stuff - firewood, dark chocolate, powdered chocolate, sweet & sticky honey, peat, toffee. Finishes with a very caramelised/honey forward peatiness right on the back end with a touch of coconut. Works extremely well and I can see why this is so highly regarded. Very solid stuff

Bottle at mane liquor thornbridge tasting night. Pours a dark brown/black with a frothy tanned head. Nose is quite interesting. Nutmeg and bitter chocolate with dark roasty malts. Taste is much more of the same. Heaps of dark chocolate malts coming through even a touch of coconut towards the end of the palate. Fucking interesting beer Im finding it hard to describe. Would definitely recommend trying for pure complexity. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
