Craft Clerkenwell. Opaque black - brown beer, little tan head. Light dry palate. Rich and unsweet dark malt and chocolate. A little balancing oaky vanilla sweetness on the backend. A whisper of fruits. All right.

UPDATED: APR 21, 2012 Cask at The Euston Tap, London. Pours brown with a tighy, creamy tan head. Definite nips of vanilla in the aroma, with subtle milk chocolate. Medium sweet flavor, some roasty cocoa, semi-sweet vanilla, mild burnt wood. Medium bodied with fine, smooth carbonation. Dries out a bit on the finish, with some modest tobacco, bittersweet cocoa, vanilla, mild roast. Lasting roasty bitterness. Nicely integrated vanilla in this one. Very good beer. (3.8)

Cask at CPK, London. Pours brown with a beige foam head. Nice vanilla and charred malt roast aroma with cocoa, too. Medium sweet flavor with lots of dry cocoa, light vanilla and chocolate syrup. Light to medium bodied with fine carbonation. Dry finish with light, leafy bitterness, vanilla, earth, dirt and rich cocoa. Very nice. (3.8)

Lovely chocolatey aroma. Dang, this is another classic chocolate stout as a real ale, that’s the only context where I really like the doping, and only if kept subtle. Light fruity esters keep it interesting. Refreshing palate despite the sweetness. None of the stickiness less subtle chocolate-laced brews have. The finish is a touch hoppy too, but mostly the choco roast lovely.
