Originally released a for the Chesterfield CAMRA festival.
Renamed as Wild Raven in 2013 due to another beer going by the name "Raven" elsewhere
The recipe for the brew came from James Kemp, who joined the team a few months ago. Previously crowned the New Zealand Home Brewing Champion in 2008 and winner of a Liberty Award, Kemp used Maris Otter, Black Patent and Chocolate malt along with Nelson Sauvin, Centennial and Sorachi hops.
The beer, called Raven, has bitterness and hop character and plenty of malt flavours to give it complexity.
James moved on to Buxton brewery and is now a freelance brewer

Pours with medium head, dark brown colour in appearance. Smell is very pleasant with a hint of mustard like sharp finish. Taste is very pleasant, not too bitter, very nice aftertaste. Carbonation just helps release the full flavour. Excellent beer!

Draft - Skunky hops and a touch of roast. Maroon with a rich beige head. Light pine and toasted malts. Subpar on both sides.

UPDATED: AUG 24, 2014 500ml bottle shared in a Struise glass. Pours a very dark (but thin) brown with a generous and foamy off-white head which last well. Aroma is overpowering hops and resin notes. Taste is more of the same with a fleeting taste of tart blackcurrants which then progresses into flowery hops and pine notes with a citric bitter finish. Unfortunately, my hopes were too high for this as the only BIPA I have tried previously is Struise S.H.I.T which was truly magnificent. This on the other hand was too much IPA and not enough black.

---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle, 500ml. A dark ruby beer with a big creamy head. It has a floral aroma with roasted malt, lots of hops and grapefruit. Taste is bitter with a strong toasted finish. Rich and dense with high carbonation and some astringency. A noteworthy Black IPA.

Bottle, 500ml. Dark ruby/brown with a foamy, frothy brown head. Rich roasted and strongly hopped aroma. Robust, but smooth and creamy. Very nice dark malt caracter with a heavy bitterness. Extremely drinkable and perfectly balanced.

Drank from a bottle at a bar. Nice, black and bitter. There’s some smoke and malts in the taste.

500ml bottle at home, poured into a big tulip, ABV 6.6% Pours a very dark brown beer, with a talla and thick tan head. Great retention, leaves heavy lacing on the glass. Aroma of hops, light citrus, pine needles, resin, grapefruit. Very tasty, again quite hoppy with an intense enough bitterness on the finish and especially on the aftertaste. Pine, some citrus, roasted malts. Medium body, good carbonation, very dry on the palate. Great beer.

Bottle from AmmersinO, Vienna. Very dark brown body, with some red reflections and a big, creamy, light tan head. Delicious aroma of grapefruit, peach, some tropical fruits, some pine and very interesting dark malt notes, like tiramisu, milk chocolate, biscuit. Taste is very smooth, with citrus, peach, moderate pine, some berries, chocolate, biscuit, coffee. Mouthfeel is medium, creamy, with a moderate carbonation and it finishes bitter, moderate roasty, slightly dry with citrus, pine and some coffee and cocoa. This is propably the smoothest Black IPA I’ve had so far! Perfectly balanced, with lovely hop aromas and creamy, complex dark malt notes, that aren’t too dominant. The comparatively moderate ABV makes this pretty easy to drink. Simply delicious!
