Originally released a for the Chesterfield CAMRA festival.
Renamed as Wild Raven in 2013 due to another beer going by the name "Raven" elsewhere
The recipe for the brew came from James Kemp, who joined the team a few months ago. Previously crowned the New Zealand Home Brewing Champion in 2008 and winner of a Liberty Award, Kemp used Maris Otter, Black Patent and Chocolate malt along with Nelson Sauvin, Centennial and Sorachi hops.
The beer, called Raven, has bitterness and hop character and plenty of malt flavours to give it complexity.
James moved on to Buxton brewery and is now a freelance brewer

500ml Bottle. This pours a almost black beer with the slightest of reddish hues. It has a thick tan head that leaves a moderate lacing. Take a smell of this beel and your senses ignite- theres grapefruit but also malt, dark chocolate, maltiness, hops and the faintest hint of burnt toffee. Tastewise this is extremely complex and this review will not do it justice. Its a bitter grapefruit start with a subtle move through burnt toffee (again) to biscuit and malt through to a bitter finisdh with a re-emergance of the grapefruit. Wonderfully complex and an absloute stonking beer. I may have found a new favourite!! If I was to recommend a English craft beer to someone who wasnt familiar with our products- this would be it- it has everything yet its not over done = BRILLIANT!!!!!!!

Bottle from utobeers. bbd 16/04/14. Pours a dark blacky red colour. Slightly off white head. a bit foamy. Nice hoppy, fruity, sticky sweet smell. Medium body, lovely mouthfeel. Slight carbonation and smooth. Lovely blanace of flavours - from sweet mango and passion fruit to bitter grapefruit. Theres some coffee bitterness there too, some choc... Well balanced. Its very nice.

No dark malt tones at all! Truely an ipa. A really nice one as well. Aroma and taste are well balanced.

BOTTLE. Head: beige, medium-big, frothy, avg. retention. Aroma: strong citrus, grapefruit, pineapple and pine. Possibly some toasted notes. Taste: citrus, possibly dark malt, moderate bitterness. A nice, aromatic and juicy IPA. But what is Black IPA supposed to mean? I was not able to detect any serious dark malt notes. So, for the moment a Black IPA for me is an IPA that is black.

Black ipa. Profumatissima. Luppoli in gran evidenza. Ottimo equilibrio tra dolcezza del malto e amaro. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Poors a dark beer, with a good white head. Hops in the noise, and further away the roasted malts. A creamy medium bodied beer, and good carbonated. Very soft and mild, where the hops have the overhand. A very refreshing BIPA!! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

citrus, spruce, toast, black, clear, frothy, medium sweetness, medium bitterness, medium body, creamy. Quite nice, creamy and balanced, however the IPA is good, but for a black IPA misses some roastiness. Maybe a bit to restrained and balanced, but well made.

Pours dark with off white head. Head is foamy and sticks to glass all the way down. Woody aroma with hints of tropical hops, with sweet caramel forcing its way in there. Chocolate and lemon flavours with dry bitter aftertaste. A bit of alcohol coming through which spoils the balance a bit. Its light for a black ipa and has low carbonation. Its probably the best black ipa Ive had. Nice.
