Originally released a for the Chesterfield CAMRA festival.
Renamed as Wild Raven in 2013 due to another beer going by the name "Raven" elsewhere
The recipe for the brew came from James Kemp, who joined the team a few months ago. Previously crowned the New Zealand Home Brewing Champion in 2008 and winner of a Liberty Award, Kemp used Maris Otter, Black Patent and Chocolate malt along with Nelson Sauvin, Centennial and Sorachi hops.
The beer, called Raven, has bitterness and hop character and plenty of malt flavours to give it complexity.
James moved on to Buxton brewery and is now a freelance brewer

The nose grabs you round the back of the neck, stares into your eyes, and snarls "Youre gonna love me." Notes of toasted dark malt with hints of hoppy complexity in balance. Pours a deep brown with little head. You sip it and then, yup - there you go. The reason this is such a fashionable style at the moment. Everything that is warm and rich about a fine porter married with everything that is crisp and juicy in a fine IPA in a wedding that is fiery, tumultious, but ultimately balanced and harmonious. The finish is ... well it aint divorce, thats the point. Fabulous.

Very smooth and full bodied mouthfeel. Black in color, kahki head. Smell of centennial. Piney, resinous, slight c-hop characte, medium to low bitterness. Malt is noticable but not infringed on the hops. Pretty good.

Clear dark brown, tan head. Nose is floral, fruity (mainly grapefruit) hops, piney bitterness, malt. Taste begins with malty, bready hints and ends with medium fruity-hoppy bitterness with lots of pine, grapefruit and some roasty hints in the background. Prickly carbonation, thin to medium body, slightly dry finish. Crisp and refreshing.

Bottle from the Beer Hawk website. Pours a deep black colour with a decent and lasting off-white head, could be a Schwarzbier. Hoppy aroma. Crisp initial flavour, overall dominated by the hops. Pine, bitter. Dont know what it was about this beer, liked it and enjoyed every sip but somehow didnt love it. Maybe not as much of a kick from the dark malt as Id hoped, maybe the hops were a little lacking in complexity. Would love to try it from a cask.

Pours jet black with a nice creamy head (which stays). Aroma is smoky roast, with bitterness and floral hops. Taste is quite light, with some lasting bitterness. Alcohol taste is not present. Body is thin, but the head makes up for it. Eyes closed, youd struggle to detect that its black - maybe the roast would give you a hint.
