Brewblackhole shared this bottle with me(thank you!)Poured a wonderfull reddish copper color.Has a fruity/alcholic/malty aroma to it.Upon first sip I was suprised on how smooth the mouthfeel was.It had a great malty/hop flavor with a hint of alcohol flavor,I was waiting for that huge biitter finish like alot of these higher alcohol brerws have, but to my suprise,it wasnt there.Just wonderfuly smooth all the way through! beermatrix (1497) - Twin Cities, Minnesota, USA - OCT 24, 2007
Wow! Everything I’d hope from Three Floyds in a Barleywine pours out just as I should have expected. Thick and vicious! Looks like caramel milk when pouring. The glass accepts the contents quickly and as it turns about in heavy thick scarvings of yellow ochre swirls and light brown whirls. It builds a lightly thick capping of foam lightly with large billowing bubbles which soap up slowly to dwindle down to its frothy middling level before finally fading to a thick whispy skim always sitting. The color finally settles a dark rusty brown with a flash of dark orange within. Fuckin’ Beautiful !
Aroma is a nice mix of highly present caramel goo mixed with a perfumed tight little sent of deep orange, deeper lemon, deepest pineapple, and some tattered pine sap thrown in. Clean, robust, and boastfully delightful on the nose.
But oh my the taste, the taste!...remarkable delicious! Holy fuck! ...Yum! Need I say more?
OK maybe I should try. Ummm.... how ’bout; Thick, sugary sweet laden caramel flavors are big and twisted upon a piney citrus juiced, flowery palate of goodness! Yet delicately woven with one melange of fun hoppiness that plants a bunch of fun and long lasting durations of slightly pithy bitterness interwoven within the thick juicy pulp of each fruit I might be able to summon in the ideas of tropical treats and freshness. Peach, nectarine, pineapple, orange, mango, lemon, tangerine, apple, red grapefruit, and a flinting of green grape. Yum! No banana I’m afraid. But the the caramel sweetened firmness more than enough makes up for it. Believe me. It’s Heavenly!
The feel is thick and slippery, with a girth that stands on it own with a big, tall standing malt body made of caramel goodness and plastered with a hoppy touch of bite and bitterness that eludes the parching areas and goes right for the easy going goodness of juicy balance and alcohol. Why, because the 12.5 % is no where to be found until it hits the inside the head quickly after dispersing most of the contents of the bottle to the glass and then to the lips. No doubt. Creamy and lush, full and balanced; this stuff rocks with unbelievable drinkable ease and too much, so much so, I’m uncomprehensible to the point of utmost uncomprehensiblity?! I can’t handle it, but love it! Great stuff! jezmez68 (404) - Chesterton, Indiana, USA - JAN 21, 2008
Bottle shared with a friend during the Packers/Giants playoff game. Yellow wax (2007). Pours amberish brown. Smells of caramel and malt. Taste is a nice mix of malts and hops, however does not come off as "hoppy." Very nice body and mouthfeel. I didn’t know this was so rare. I had been saving this one since October 23. 750ml bottle from Drinks over Dearborn, in Chicago. Pours a hazy golden color with offwhite head and foamy lacing. Beautiful aroma of citrus and ripe appricot. Nice flavor, balance of sweet dried fruit and slight bitter. Traces of spice and ripe fruit. Nice lingering sweetness and dryness.
22oz bottle from Whole Foods Market in Chicago. Light copper color offwhite head with slight lacing. Strong malty sweet aroma, dried fruit candy and toffee. Nice carbonation, noticeable alcohol, though not overpowering. Malty sweet flavor, balanced with hoppy bitter; traces of citrusy oranges and toffee. Bala aftertaste lingers on the tongue alcohol not overpowering. maneliquor (3514) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - DEC 20, 2012
UPDATED: FEB 1, 2013 White wax bottle. Has been in a temp controlled cellar since we got it through trade. Pours vibrant orange with a small, very firm white cap on top. Nose shows hop resin, loads of passionfruit and tropical fruit notes, and some deeper, darker fruits underneath. A touch of orange and toffee in there too. Taste showcases the fruits fantastically. Heavy caramel biscuit with more hop resin. Sweet passionfruit and mango are lasting. Slick and full mouth feel. Can’t taste the booze at all. Dangerously easy drinking stuff. Unbelievable beer

Poured from a red wax bomber bought at 3F in 2012 into a 3F Teku glass amber red with a lacy beige head that laces beautifully down the side of the glass.
Aroma is hoppy yet highly sweet. Very faint alcohol.
Flavor is molasses thick sweet with lots of citrus hops like a sugar pine tree. 10.5% ABV well hidden. Bitter sweet finish.
Extremely well balanced. Fave barley wines are American & this one is pretty much PERFECT!!

An outstanding barleywine. Very powerful, very boozy, very sweet beer. Nice amount of hops that aren’t completely swallowed up by the malts. Tried with Al, Brian, Brandon, and Josh at Local Option in 2017 after ASEH. cakanator (452) - South Hadley, Massachusetts, USA - NOV 26, 2011
22oz bottle, yellow wax 2007. Had this from notes bottle shared at REM release. One of the best BW’s I’ve had. Pours a wonderful caramel hue, slight head. Aromas are filled with toffee, vanilla, caramel, and slight citrus from the hops still present in the nose. Palate is tremendously balanced and smooth with a slight bittering finish. Flavors and bold following the nose perfect, great weight too, nothing thin. Would I say this could go longer? Yes. Ages so good. Jhyland13 (28) - - MAY 8, 2012
Pours a dark copper. Aroma of hops and a floral citrus. Rich smooth taste of caramel and malted barley. Hints of hops as well. A+ beer all around. beersammich (76) - Morgantown, West Virginia, USA - DEC 29, 2014
Pours with a decent head. Smells great, tastes great. Extremely well balanced, nothing overwhelming the other. Tastes of hops, citrus, mild alcohol taste, slightly bitter finish. A really great beer.
Had from a bottle.
