Bottle... Pours dark brown with a small, creamy, khaki head. Decent retention. The aromatic highlights are charcoal and resin. Full-bodied with a creamy mouthfeel with laid-back carbonation. The flavor features roastiness, singed malts and resiny bitterness. No real chocolatiness here - just roastiness. Moderate bitterness and alcohol warmth in the finish. 22 ounce bottle from Badger Spirits (February 2016), served around cellar temp or perhaps a bit above in a Maudite snifter. Not-quite-opaque dark maple to black with a largish, slow-diminishing maple-cream head and a bit of fine lacing...nose is burnt chocolate, grapy-vinous, a bit of resinous hops, licorice - pleasant enough but not particularly potent or exciting...body is chocolaty-sweet, lightly acidic, some faint lactic-sour qualities, with a finish that is still fairly sweet but a touch more bitter, woody, and at least a littler drier...mouthfeel is quite soft, carbonation muted but noticeable...very smooth and easy-drinking Impy with almost no alcohol noticeable. This is reasonably solid and I’m glad that I can get it easily, given the unavailability to peons like me of Dark Lord - but at the same time, I can’t help remembering every sampling I’ve had of the latter, and good as this is, well... jbruner (5002) - Marietta, Georgia, USA - SEP 27, 2016
Pours a deep brownish black from the bomber with thin ring of bubbly tan brown head. Aroma of dark chocolate, tobacco earth, smoky roast notes, and a hint of booze. Taste is more of the same, good balance of deep roasted flavors, booze is well hidden. Thick and chewy, minimal carbonation, hint of oxidation, overall nice stout, as expected from them.
