Strong citrus zest aromas, orange slices, chocolate, and pine needles too. Taste is orange & lemon zest, grapefruit, chocolate; pine tar in the finish. Very good stuff.

Sample at Daily Growler UA during the "Epic 3 Year Anniversary Party + Food Truck(s)" event on 12/17/2015. Inky black color with a medium thick foamy tan head that diminishes gradually. Patchy lacing on the glass. Aroma of roast malt, dark chocolate and coffee. Full-bodied with a roasty malt and coffee character and notes of piney hops and vanilla in the background. The finish is chocolate malt up front with a hoppy aftertaste. Solid beer all around.

UPDATED: DEC 22, 2016 Bottle to oversized snifter. Black pour with dark wood softly glowing from edges. Nice head that reduces down to a nice frothy island. Nose is surprisingly doused with American hops. Delicate pine, grapefruit, and bubblegum engulfed in a roasty coffee, wood char, brown sugar, and striking cacao malt. Flavor is has the bitterness of an IPA with subtle grapefruit and citrus notes while gentle, silky, heavy roasted chocolate and cold brew coffee reign over your palate followed by a stiff burn. As it all warms, oh boy...the line between black IPA and imp stout becomes permeable. Drinkable body for an RIS, and finishes bitter but quick. A big beer with a drinkable body and American hops to boot. Quite interesting.

Approximately half of a 22 oz. bottle, consumed on 1-9-16. Thanks to iradog for sharing. Pours dark brown with a moderate amount of beige head. Produces good lacing. Bitter coffee and chalk scents. Astringent smell. Bitter, dry, roasted malt flavor. Coffee with milk taste. Reminiscent of a double black IPA. Quite bitter. Lively and silky in the palate. Medium to full body. Im not thrilled.

Pint draft from Daily Growler, UA during 3rd anniversary party: blackish pour with thin ring of tan head. aroma of roasted malt and cocoa. tastes are surprisingly hoppy, backed by roasty, chocolate, caramel, citrus. only faint licorice which is good by me. easy drinking and really well balanced. finishes clean bitter and fruity. hard to explain but unique in my experience. - 8.2

Black pour. Pillowy orange tan head. Sweet pine and citrus with a little cocoa, roast malt, brown sugar and ash/tar. Flavor is sweet citrusy hops, mild pine, and fruit with trailing brown sugar, soft roast, and chocolate. Relatively sweet with some moderate backend grapefruit bitterness. Very creamy, almost nitro-like, despite the lower carbonation. Other than this, solid as ever.

At Ratebeer Best. Pours near black with a modest tan head and a treacle aroma. There is a rich chocolate and dark molasses flavor with a bourbon finish.

Thick black pour, brown head that fades quickly leaving a good amount of lacing. Aroma is heavy roast, coffee and some cocoa. Flavor follows, with a mildly bitter finish. Very nice beer.
