Draft @FFF. Black w/ no head. Thin, watery body. Taste is dominated by the whiskey. The std Blk Sun has more body and more flavor and is an outstanding brew... the barrel did this wrong. Not sure why the high ratings. A pass for me dumontn (530) - St. Joseph, Michigan, USA - FEB 6, 2012
Draft @brewpub pours totally black with a medium brown head and good retention. Aroma is sour vanilla bourbon barrel, chocolate, toffee, caramel, faint green hops. Taste is just how it smells; perfect balance of barrelly vanilla character and chocolate. Body is medium/full, average carbonation (higher than expected), frothy mouthfeel, long warming whisky finish. overall, very delicious but overcarbonated for sure. hollardustin (327) - Indiana, USA - JAN 29, 2012
On tap at 3Floyds. Pours black with a thin beige head. Aroma is bourbon, oak, dark roast, vanilla, and booze. Taste is the same as the nose with a surprisingly light body and a soft mouthfeel. Tasty brew. HighWine (959) - Whalezbro, Illinois, USA - JAN 28, 2012
Tap at the brewery. Black pour like spent motor oil with a brown head. Aroma of roast toasted oak, coffee beans, and bourbon vanilla extract. Taste is absolutely phenomenal. It’s sweet, roasty, smooth and delicious. I had to stop after every sip with shock at how good this beer tastes. Very coffee-like with a crime brûlée like sweetness and milk chocolate essence. The hops linger in the background but are present enough to keep this from being at all cloying. Velvety mouthfeel and a nice full finish. So good I had two, which almost never happens for me in one session at a place with lots of great beer. FishBizkit (234) - Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, USA - NOV 3, 2011
Aged in bourbon barrels with cherries. Dark black with big creamy brown head. Bourbon and vanilla aroma. Lots of cherry in the aroma and taste, not sour at all though. Almost brings out a coffee flavor. Nuttiness. Really enjoyable.

Not as impressed with this one from the FFF gang. There other beers are to good for me to drink this one again. deyholla (11759) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - JUL 1, 2010
On tap at Map Room. Poured black with a small brown head that dissipated to a film around the edges. Aroma was full of overwhelming bourbon with some sweet grains and a bit of dark fruit. Flavor again had a very strong bourbon note that overwhelmed the underlying sweet grains and dark fruit. TheAlum (7164) - Aurora, Illinois, USA - JUN 30, 2010
UPDATED: JAN 18, 2012 Draft on tap at Map Room (Chicago, IL). Pours a pitchblack pour, small greyish head, opaque, with a nice feel. Pretty, thicker edge clinging head, laces ok. Aromas are a hefty dose of bourbon spirit, wet oak, vanilla tannins, roasty malts, cocoa. Nice. A lot of the hops haved died. Initial is lighter side of medium, a bit thinned, but then again the beer seems to be a hard barrel ager, a thinner more drinkable, but well hopped stout. Thinner booziness, bourbon, warming, earthy florals and straight bitterness. In a shell, thinned out by the barrel and not able to stand up to extended barrel time. Tasty, but dry and thin overall. A lingering roast and wet oak. Not bad, tasty. With a lighter body, thinness, the booziness is more tolerable as I get in. The woodford is flavorful, the hopds actually are still there the flavor sticks to the backend.

2011: The beer drinks a bit thicker, more balanced. Healthy barrel. Some lingers hops. I’d bump it up a touch. Seems they’ve narrowed in their BA of this beer a bit on the 2nd try. Improved.
Nose is domintaed by bourbon. Velvety creamy head. Flavors of coconut, vanilla, bourbon, and chocolate. Not as boozy as some of their other BA beers. Pretty drinkable. Medium bodied with a bourbon dry finish. Nothing like regular Black Sun except the dry finish. Regular Black Sun might be better. alexsdad06 (10486) - West Chester, Ohio, USA - NOV 21, 2009
Draught at the brewery during DLD ’08. Pours very dark brown/ black with a thin tan head that slowly dissipates to a tan ring. Aroma of toasted dark malt, some black malt, sweet bourbon, dark chocolate and some vanilla. Taste is toasted dark malt, chocolate, some bourbon and vanilla showing nice balance. Finish is smooth with a dark chocolate, bourbon and vanilla aftertaste that slowly disappears. Another excellent bourbon aged beer from 3F.
