American Sour in wine barrels with blueberries

In order to survive in the 14th century one needed to be a force to be reckoned with. In Brittany, Spain and France this knight proved his mettle in battle. This tart blueberry ale was brewed in one of our 3000 gallon foeders in his honour.

Bottle from the brewery store. A murky golden amber. No head at all. Funky-tart aromas and flavor. Subtle fruit-blueberry flavors. Not too sour. Hints of vanilla-oak. Short dry tart acidic finish.

750 mL waxed bottle poured, with much thanks to Tcon for the share. Always a treat. A bright, glowing, reddish orange pour with a fading head. A very tart grape and blueberry aroma. Extremely sour impression to start. Flavor is a ton of sweet, but mostly sour blueberry, grape, and red wine notes. Lingering wine and tart berry finish. Very nice.

Bottle, from brewery. Goood aroma, kind of a weak good. Fairly tart, mildly sweet aroma. Clean brownish orange color no head or lace. Fairly sour flavor. Medium body, still smooth mouthfeel, fairly sour finish. Meh, this one didn’t make the grade overall. Aroma is mild to me. Appearance suffers from flatness. Mouthfeel is dead still. Oh well.

Very hazy purple, red color. Sour nose with oak, balsamic vinegar, and blueberry. Light, tart, lots of berry fruit, balsamic vinegar, brett in the mouth. Very nice. Lingering blueberry, oak and balsamic finish. Really nice stuff.

Three Floyds is an old pro by now at making sure their releases set the bar high. This sour does just that. Thanks to the person who kindly shared a bottle with me so I could find out for myself what this former up and comer is doing these days. Obviously that isn’t resting on their laurels.

Aroma / Appearance - The cloudy reddish brown body bubbles with life. Sickly sticky legs crawl up and down the glass. Malt vinegar, blueberry puree, and sweet dense alcohol bite at the air like a dog at someone’s heels as they jog past a house.

Flavor / Palate - Blueberry pie tickles the senses. The tartness is sweet with a sour tang that plays off the overall experience to form a memorable and top notch experience. Everything about this defines Three Floyds as more than just a hop focused Midwestern brewery. I’d love to try a few more things in this vein the next year or two.

0.75l waxed bottle shared with The Tasting Crew. Quite a cloudy one this! On the border of being murky and deep blood amberish purple in color. A bubbly sidesticking just off-white head on the top. Bretty sour nose with raspberries, cherries and blueberries. Wood sour in a way. Herbal, some wet human skin and traces of caramel. Lot and lots of aroma and it’s most definitely pleasant to smell at this. Oh, it’s super sour in the taste also. Tart blueberries, cherries and wood. Skogsbæryogurt and lemon acidity. Lemon peel oils actually. Then the blueberries kicks in, reminding me of trips in the forest putting blueberries in my mouth instead if the jar I was supposed to put them in. A really flavorful and fine one! 17.12.2014

[Bottle (750ml) shared with GregClow, jercraigs & mabel -- c/o j&m] Pours a hazy orange-peach with a small quick-diminishing frothy white head. Really nice tart aroma, quite fruity, along with red wine notes. Slightly watery, but tasty flavour (7+) is fruity but also very tart and sour -- surprisingly so. Average bodied. Overall it’s quite good.

75 cl bottle @ home. Pours hazy reddish amber with an off-white head that leaves a little lacing. Aroma and flavour are brett, blueberries, oak, and caramel - with a tart finish.
