8-5-11 Huge thanks to Brian for sharing the Pappy. The pappy version is much smoother than their regular oaked version. It has so much more rounded bourbon flavors in my opinion. Great brown sugar bourbon aroma and flavor that is real smooth all the way around. Outstanding beer.
Bottle, many thnx to kermis. Pours a pitch black beer, almost headless. Aroma has lots of molasses, lots of bourbon, vanilla, oak and some sugary notes as well. Flavor is intense on the sweet side, typical Dark Lord, really strong, also lots and lots of bourbon, with all the vanilla going on. Very smooth drinking, long sweet aftertaste. Sampled at Week van Het NL Bier 2017 @ Grote Kerk Den Haag. Massive thanks to kermis for being the kindest beerlover and congrats to Deanso who’s here in person for a massive milestone. Black with no head. Big sweet roasted malts, big chocolate with perfect syruppy sweet bourbon allover it, big coconut. Big sweet and moderate bitter. Over medium body. Just so lovely. Gravy train. Bottle shared at the Moeder Lambic cellar tasting 2015. thanks a lot to kermis for sharing this! bottle 085/484. poured a dark black colour with a oily shad on top. the smell is incredible on this one. such an incredible aroma of sweet marshmallows heated above a campfire and than cooled down in the finest bourbon. sweet charred oak, dark roasted notes, sticky toffee, sweet vanilla whipped cream, sweet bakers chocolate, and a lot of sweet thick fudge. (compared to one other pappy beer BCS rare there is just no heat of spicy pappy in there! which is good). taste just follows the nose and is excellent! lot’s of sweet sticky bourbon, vanilla, sweet marshmallows, marzipan, oak, and some fainted toasted coconut aswell, a ton of thick sweet sticky chocolate molasses. just incredible. mouthfeel is extremely full bodied and creamy all the way. this one was together with the brandy vanilla the 2 best beers that i have had to date!. the pappy barrel works so well. cheers again kermis! what a unforgettable experience kermis (14999) - The Hague / Amsterdam, NETHERLANDS - OCT 3, 2015
UPDATED: MAY 9, 2017 Bottle shared at the Moeder Lambic cellar session 2015 along with the full 2011 lineup. Pours black with a few brown bubbles. Aroma still shows the pappy strongly upfront, with oak, dark chocolate, marshmallow, fudge, vanilla and roast. Flavour is heavy sweet, but calmed from the normal cloying dark lord way. Tried again in May 2017: It’s still drinking well and not showing signs of oxidation or anything like that. Still strong pappy with Dark Lord sweetness but in a way that’s subdued and just works with the barrel aging. Really great!
Bottle shared by someone at DLD 2012 from backlog notes. This pours jet black with no real head to speak of; perhaps a few tan bubbles scattered about. It is so thick that it refuses to leave the sides of the glass. The aroma has the big sweet caramel malt, roast,dark fruits, etc from the base Darklord and adds bourbon, light oak, anise, and hints at the abv. The flavors are intense and include roasted malt, chocolate,coffee, caramel, dark fruits, vanilla,oak, bourbon, and anise. There is a dark chocolate like bitterness battling with the sweetness of the beer. This version is smoother and more refined than the regular bourbon Dark Lord. I don’t know why the barrel aged versions are far superioir in so many cases than the regular beer. Much like BCS Rare in that it improves on the original. 309/484. Light bourbon and roast. Compared to the 2012 I had 6 months ago, most of the bourbon and sweetness died off. Amazing Roasty flavors and super smooth. Some more dark fruit and cane sugar sweetness comes as it warms. Super thick and chewy like a dark lord should be. Tasty, but not the amazement I thought I would be. Barrel-Aged Dark Lord tasting! Thanks to all the guys in the tasting group who helped make this happen.
The beer is very dark brown with a small beige head. Great aroma with inviting bourbon scents. So subtle, delicate, and smooth. Wow. Effortless to drink. Where is the alcohol?!? I could easily sit in my cabin in the woods with of keg of this and sip the night away. Silky smooth feel. World class beer. One of the best bourbon barrel stouts I have ever had. My highest recommendation.
