7/27/2010: Three Floyds Ice Grille... Aroma: Sugary fruits laced with sharp alcohol. Appearance: Bright amber color; off-white crown; wavy lacing. Flavor: Syrypy caramel; smooth spice (cinammon?); faint cotton candy. Palate: Medium-body; smooth. Overall: Okay, slightly disappoined.

Backlogged rating: Tap at Three Floyds Takeover at Trion Tavern...pours a dark brown...fairly still. Nose has notes of dark fruit, some dark malt characteristics and is very "hot." I had this at the brew pub, on tap and into a tulip...Pours a light muddy brown with amber highlihgts. Really light for a dubbel, light tope head, ok retention, thick but falls quickly, good lacing...Aroma is really light, raisins, plums, dark fruits in general but they are all sweet, then there is sugar too that makes this whole thing way too sweet, no balance here...The taste also is super sweet, no depth or complexity here, sugar, sweet plums. This is not a dubbel, or at least not a Belgian dubbel.
This is a very disappointing dubbel overall, an average american dubbel. Too sweet overall, lacking complexity, difficult to drink.

On tap at Brewdog Bar Aberdeen. Colour; cloudy reddish-brown with a rapidly diminishing white head. Nose; dark dried fruits, brown sugar, caramel, cloves. Draft at FFF. Thick orange-brown, almost opaque. Steady beige head. Super sweet Belgian Dubbel. Rich with the candi sugar and Belgian yeast tones. Soft on the palate, mellow carbonation. Still comes off a little rich for the style. Raisins, prune, very deep stuff. Draft at brewpub. Brown body with red highlights. Small, but fizzy, white head, mostly diminishing. Aroma of caramel, raisin, vanilla. Hint of plum and pineapple. The flavor is moderately bitter and lightly bitter. It finishes moderately sweet and moderately bitter with some light acidity and a touch of sourness. Medium body, watery texture turning creamy, lively carbonation. Certainly not a traditional dubbel, but then it wouldn’t be from FFF if it were. Style aside, an interesting recipe — plenty of sweetness with more bitterness than expected. Tasted on draft at Revolution. Pours dark amber with a medium white head that leaves heavy lace. The nose is sweet with strawberry and raspberry fruitiness, super caramelized malt, light hops, and a dusty quality as well. Flavors are also sweet, starting with caramel malt and moving straight into the fruits. Strawberry, raspberry, peach, and especially apricot all come through nicely. On tap at the brewpub. Poured a clear deep amber with a light brown head that laced slightly. Aroma had notes of brown sugar with a underlying floral and sweet grain note and a hint of citrus. Flavor was sweet with brown sugar as well with growing floral and a bit of underlying sweet grain. Texture was a bit grainy.
